Tour Guide Profile: Jan Pienaar
Jan Pienaar has birded extensively throughout South Africa and has traveled to remote corners of our continent in search of birds. He has spent a number of years residing in the African bush, sharing the birds, wildlife and ecology of the continent with eager visitors.
Jan Pienaar was raised in the flatlands of the northern Free State and has extensively birded throughout South Africa. He started birding at a very young age and this passion for birds and wildlife launched him into a guiding career immediately after his schooling. Since then he has spent six years in the African bush, sharing the birds, wildlife and ecology of this rich biome with hundreds of foreign and local visitors. This included three years in the prestigious Sabi Sands Game Reserve bordering Kruger National Park, and well known for its “Big 5”. Jan’s other interests include photography, stargazing and an almost unhealthy fascination with anything scientific! He holds qualifications of the Field Guides Association of South Africa, including SKS (Specialized Knowledge and Skills) on birds and is a very experienced game tracker. His wealth of bush experiences will certainly be a bonus to participants on his tours with Rockjumper, where he is now a full-time guide.

Apart from his skills in the bush, his obvious love of animals and birds, and his thirst for knowledge, Jan Pienaar is a most engaging, intelligent character with an easy manner and a good sense of humour. Time spent in his company was instructive and good fun. We will remember the time with him with fond memories for many years to come.”
