Tour Guide Profile: PJ Fryer
PJ previously guided at a premier lodge bordering Kruger for over two years, and is now a full-time member of the Rockjumper team where he also plays an important role in operations.
PJ grew up on a farm in the heart of Zululand, South Africa. His interest in the natural environment started at a very young age and he spent countless hours in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, St Lucia and Mkuze Game Reserves. It was while growing up in these amazing areas that PJ’s interest in birds developed. After school he became a qualified field guide and worked at a private lodge in the Timbavati Game Reserve adjacent to Kruger National Park. The Timbavati provided the perfect environment to gain experience in tracking high profile game on foot, interacting with big game on a daily basis and, of course, honing his birding skills. Wanting to further his education he later obtained a BSc in Geography and Environmental Management and worked for an Environmental Consulting Firm for 3 years.
He has also travelled extensively in southern Africa and has a particular passion for Africa’s last remaining wildernesses.
In more recent times PJ has become a proud father to his first child, James William Fryer. He hopes to have James birding as soon as he is able to hold up a pair of binoculars!!!
“PJ was outstanding in every way! We thoroughly enjoyed his company and his birding knowledge and skills were superb. He really made the trip for us!!”
