Glen Valentine and Rainer Summers recently returned from two immensely successful back-to-back departures to the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan and adjacent Assam. Both trips scored huge totals and produced some of the most mouth-watering birds in all of Asia. Some of the many highlights include Swamp Francolin, King Quail, Blood Pheasant, brilliant Satyr Tragopan, resplendent Himalayan Monal, rare and localized White-winged Duck, elusive White-bellied Heron, Oriental Hobby, Ibisbill, Red-headed and Ward’s Trogon, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide, Black-headed Shrike-babbler, Fire-capped Tit, seldom-seen Rufous-rumped and Bristled Grassbird, Coral-billed Scimitar Babbler, Sikkim Wedge-billed Babbler, Long-billed Wren-Babbler, Himalayan Cutia, exquisite Fire-tailed Myzornis, Great, Brown, Black-throated, White-breasted, Pale-billed and Fulvous Parrotbill, highly sought-after Beautiful Nuthatch, Blue-fronted Robin, Fire-tailed Sunbird and Golden-naped Finch. A number of great mammals were also encountered, including Indian One-horned Rhinoceros, Indian Elephant, Water Buffalo, Golden and Nepal Grey Langur, little-known Hodgson’s Giant Flying Squirrel and Yellow-throated Marten.
