Meet Christian Artuso (Part Time Tour Leader)

Dr. Christian Artuso is a conservationist, ornithologist, avid world birder and photographer. He has lived and travelled extensively in Asia and the Americas and seen over 5,000 species of birds and photographed over 3,500. His PhD research was on the Eastern Screech Owl and he has a passion for owls, having seen 140 species to date.

    Dr. Christian Artuso was among the first to photograph some of the least known owls including Long-whiskered Owlet and Santa Marta Screech Owl, and was the first to photograph some poorly known Asian birds such as Bornean Bristlehead. He lives in Manitoba, Canada and is the Manitoba Program Manager for Bird Studies Canada. He coordinated the Manitoba Breeding Bird Atlas, leads the Manitoba Nocturnal Owl Survey, chairs the Manitoba Important Bird Area program and sits on the bird specialist subcommittee of COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada). He has been involved in recovery planning of various threatened species including the Golden-winged Warbler. Christian has trained many young ornithologists and birders, and is devoted to building citizen-science capacity by giving workshops and other forms of public outreach. He loves to share sightings and discussing bird behaviour and ecology in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Mandarin Chinese.
