What better way to celebrate this year’s extra day than by changing your desktop background to a vibrant and dazzling broadbill? These eye-catching birds, together with their sister group, the pittas, are found almost exclusively across tropical Asia and Africa (with one species in the Neotropics) and are highly sought-after. Whilst both families are filled predominantly with very brightly-colored species, broadbills are generally a little easier to spot, being found higher up in the trees whereas pittas spend a great deal of time hopping around on the dark forest floor.
Asia has undoubtedly the most spectacular members of both of these families, with Malaysia being the outstanding hotspot within the region. Home to almost half the world’s broadbill species, several of which are endemic to the island of Borneo alone, a trip to the verdant forests of this friendly nation are a must for every birder. Our Malaysia and Borneo tour offers you the opportunity of seeing up to 8 species of broadbill as well as 8 species of pitta. The Green Broadbill, while not endemic to the island, has not been missed on one of our Malaysia and Borneo tours. Our Malaysia & Borneo tours have been firm Rockjumper favourites for well over a decade now and we still have a few places available on the tour below.
Our Black Oriole and Dulit Frogmouth Extension on the other hand is a fairly new concept and targets some of Borneo’s rarest and most sought-after species. Last year’s tour produced some exceptional results with fabulous views of Black Oriole, Dulit Frogmouth, Blue-banded Pitta, Hose’s Broadbill, Mountain Serpent Eagle and Bare-headed Laughingthrush. The main tour price has also been set in Malayan Ringgit and offers excellent value for money with the local currency having depreciated over recent months.
