Nestled in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and home to more biodiversity than anywhere else in Southern Asia, Sri Lanka is sure to blow the minds of anyone with even a mild interest in the natural world. For Birders, Sri Lanka is an absolute wonderland, offering 34 very exciting endemic species that can all be seen in a single visit!

The Sri Lanka Blue Magpie is one such endemic species that stands out due to its striking appearance and enchanting behavior. It is a member of the crow family and is easily recognized by its vivid blue plumage, which shimmers in the sunlight, and its long, graduated tail. Its bright red bill and legs add a touch of contrasting brilliance, making it a true visual delight.

Some of the most notable aspects of the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie are its intelligence and adaptability. These birds are known to breed cooperatively and they can be seen foraging in groups of up to 7 individuals. Despite the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie’s capacity to adapt to disturbance, it is classed as vulnerable due to the fragmentation and degradation of its habitat, which consists of dense primary forest in the wet zone of southern Sri Lanka’s lowlands. While the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie is sure to captivate your attention, species like Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Red-faced Malkoha, Serendib Scops Owl, Crimson-backed Flameback, Layard's Parakeet and Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot will all have their time in the spotlight.

Sri Lanka's incredible natural attractions doesn't stop with its birds. The island is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including large mammals such as the Asian Elephant, Leopard, Purple-faced Langur, Water Buffalo and Sloth Bear.

On top of all this, a tour through Sri Lanka will most certainly expose you to some of the most interesting Asian flavors and cuisines and the vibrant Buddhist culture, dating back thousands of years, the reason for many of the animals being so approachable. This makes for an interesting addition to the wildly diverse birds and animals.

Join us on one of our Sri Lanka Tours in 2023 or 2024 for the chance to experience this unique and utterly amazing birding region for yourself.
