Southern India is widely hailed as one of the most important endemic bird areas in all of Asia, and our Southern India birding tour highlights not only an amazing number of endemics and near-endemics, but also spectacular scenery as we wind our way through the impressive Western Ghats mountain range. Tour targets include the gorgeous Indian Pitta, exquisite Malabar Trogon, rare Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Heart-spotted Woodpecker, White-bellied Treepie, scarce White-bellied Minivet, beautiful Black-and-orange and Nilgiri Flycatchers, Black-chinned Laughingthrush, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon and our July image, the gorgeous Malabar Whistling Thrush.
Restricted mainly to the Western Ghats of south and western India, this strikingly plumaged member of the Turdidae family occurs in forested areas with dark undergrowth and dense riverine forest; and, being a very bold species, it is also regularly found close to areas of human habitation. In fact, it was once a popular cage bird due in part to this characteristic and its incredibly beautiful, melodious and very human-like call that it utters in the early morning, so much so that it is also colloquially known as the “Whistling Schoolboy”.
Birds aside, our tour also showcases some of the region’s special mammals and other wildlife, including Indian Elephant, Gaur (Indian Bison), Dhole (Indian Wild Dog), Smooth-coated Otter and the highly localized and endemic Nilgiri Tahr. Chances also exist for Bengal Tiger as we traverse several vast tiger reserves. In addition, we also take time to marvel at one of India’s most celebrated architectural monuments, the beautiful Mysore Palace, second only to the Taj Mahal in terms of tourist popularity within the country.
This tour can also be linked with our exciting Sri Lanka – Endemic Birds & Big Game adventure, which targets every single endemic on the island (typically with great success), a fabulous opportunity for anyone wishing to save on airfares and travelling time to the region.
