Colombia has more bird species than any other country; a staggering 1,900 species (almost 20% of our planet’s birds) occur within the confines of this incredible nation, of which 89 are endemic! Among the many fantastic bird families that comprise this impressive suite of species, including toucans, trogons, hummingbirds, cotingas, manikins, antbirds and ovenbirds, it is the tanagers that arguably rank as the most impressive of the lot! With over 120 of these glorious birds gracing the country, it is little wonder that any tour to the region will typically rack up an incredible list of these often brilliantly adorned birds. Of course, it is the endemic and near-endemic tanagers that are most sought-after, one of which is the awkwardly-named but magnificent Purplish-mantled Tanager! This scarce and extremely localized species is shared only with neighboring Ecuador and is classified as near threatened due to habit loss and its small population size. Inhabiting mossy forest, this fairly social species is usually found in pairs or mixed species flocks, where its eye-searing purplish-blue back and contrasting yellow throat make it very easy to identify.
This beautiful bird is one of so many amazing species that we target on our various tours to the country; namely, our ground-breaking Colombia 1 000 Birds Mega tour, where we expect to encounter 1 000+ species in less than a month (and have already achieved this three times!); our exciting Colombia – Andean Endemics tour, which seeks out as many of Colombia’s endemic and special birds as possible, typically racking up over 600 species in just 18 days; and our Colombia Highlights tour, where we have cherry-picked some of the very best birding sites in the country for a shorter and far less intensive tour for those seeking a more relaxed and less travel-extensive experience. We also offer a short extension to the endemic-rich Santa Marta Mountains (which can be taken in conjunction with both our Andean Endemics and Highlights tours) to search for the region’s numerous endemics and endemic sub-species (many of which are due for full species status), to round off our adventures to this remarkable country.
