Kenya and Tanzania are lands of many marvels. With bird lists of over a thousand species (many of which are outrageously colorful and easily seen), it makes perfect sense that these are such popular birding destinations amongst both hard-core and casual birders alike. To boot, these countries also offer some of the best mammal viewing on the continent, and all of this is further augmented by magnificent scenery, excellent cuisine and luxury lodges set within superb surrounds.
Amongst the numerous star species to be found within their borders, the gorgeous Rosy-patched Bushshrike must surely rank amongst the most striking. This very distinctive bird is a denizen of arid and semi-arid scrub, acacia thickets and old farmlands in north-east Africa, where it can sometimes be seen singing from the top of an exposed perch, as captured in this great shot by tour participant Matthew Matthiessen.
We offer several tours to Kenya and Tanzania, including our Kenya & Tanzania Birds & Big Game safaris, which visit only the very best and most accessible birding and wildlife destinations in both Kenya and neighbouring Tanzania, and our Kenya Mega Birding tour, which provides 26 days of non-stop birding and game viewing. This tour often racks up a total in excess of 800 different species, which is simply remarkable! We also offer a short extension to Rwanda as a fascinating add-on to our Kenya & Tanzania – Birds & Big Game safari. Highlights here include tracking the Virunga race of Mountain Gorilla and seeking out a plethora of Albertine Rift endemics in the vast, beautiful Nyungwe Forest. All these tours still have some spaces remaining, so if you are interested in an African adventure of a lifetime, then please visit our website or contact the Rockjumper office for further details.
