Overview

This Bulgaria & Romania winter birding tour will take us to the northernmost part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast (Coastal Dobrudzha) to explore two of the most important European wetlands for wintering geese. This area typically supports hundreds of thousands of wild geese in the frigid winter months, including almost the entire world population of the globally threatened Red-breasted Goose. Up to 50,000 Red-breasted Geese have been spending the winter in the vicinity of lakes Durankulak and Shabla; which, thanks to their small area, good shelter conditions and the surrounding, traditionally grown winter cereal crops, have become world famous as the best sites for watching and photographing this very attractive species. In addition, the milder climate on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast allows us to enjoy wintering Dalmatian and Great White Pelicans, various waterfowl species, gulls, shorebirds, numerous raptors – and much more besides!

Our tour was really exceptional, and our guide, Glen Valentine, was fabulous!!! Being in the jungle meant our views were narrowed, but Glen went out of his way to make sure everyone had a chance to see these exceptional birds.

André our game ranger for the third time once again is impeccable! His eyesight is actually too good for words!

I look forward to another RBT tour...you can never go on too many RBT tours.

The tour was very enjoyable and interesting. Doug McCulloch's knowledge of his subject was encyclopaedic, and was as keen as mustard to share it and find us lots of birds.

Andre, our guide, has such an infectious nature, which had a huge positive effect on our stay. His incredible knowledge of birds was indeed humbling. A birder's paradise and a guide passionate about birds and nature - what more could one ask for?
