Overview

Austria and Hungary were once the centre of the wide-ranging Austro-Hungarian empire, and the two countries are filled with historical landmarks and cultural significance befitting such a history. On this tour we will visit the centuries-old wine region of Tokaj, enjoy performances of classical and traditional gypsy music and visit the immaculate and history-filled cities of Vienna and Budapest. Both countries also have numerous natural and semi-natural areas that hold typical Palearctic species such as Bearded Reedling and Eurasian Penduline Tit, European Bee-eater, Northern Goshawk, Eurasian Nuthatch and Eurasian Jay. Permanent and temporary wetlands teem with herons, ducks, raptors and shorebirds including Western Marsh Harrier, White-tailed Eagle, Common Crane, Garganey, Red-crested Pochard and Spotted Redshank, while the largest grasslands in Europe house the massive Great Bustard and Eurasian Dotterel. There’s no better way to explore Europe’s birdlife, culture and cuisine!

Please note that a Rockjumper leader may not accompany this tour unless a minimum of 7 participants are signed up. In the case of insufficient sign-ups, a professional and very experienced local guide will lead the tour instead.

David Hoddinott was an excellent leader. It was obvious he had devoted a lot of preparation time studying the birds and learning their vocalizations. I was very impressed with his knowledge. I’d love to go on another tour with him some day.

Expert guiding by Keith and Glen Valentine, aided by fabulous local talent, ensured we saw the maximum number of endemics and other birds and mammals. Perhaps more importantly, these two brothers enjoyed their time together and provided a warm, friendly and caring environment in which we all had a good time with lots of laughs, and looked out for each other to ensure everyone got on the birds and did not falter on a tough hike or challenging car ride.

Dennis Yong was certainly knowledgeable on his birds and all other wildlife. I have to hand it to him, he has YEARS of experience and it shows.

Adam Walleyn did a fantastic job organising the rest of the tour when Erik had to leave due to illness. I really appreciated his hard work and determination; for example: even though he had never been to Samoa before, his logistical work enabled us to get great views of some very difficult and unexpected species (Samoan Triller, Blue-grey Noddy).

The game drives were fantastic, André’s knowledge and attention to detail could certainly be used as the benchmark for all lodges. We were often stopping to wipe away the tears of laughter and the times spent on the drives with André will certainly be remembered. Hats off to you André, you really made our trip!!!
