Overview

Our Central & Northern Thailand birding tours cover the major birding sites of this fascinating land in our search for some very beautiful specialties. Setting out from the ostentatious capital of Bangkok, we scan the mudflats near Samut Sakhon for migrant waders (including one of the world’s most sought-after and endangered, the Spoon-billed Sandpiper), before continuing to Kaeng Krachan. This park, offering unbroken rainforest scenery, supports one of the richest bird species lists in Southeast Asia. We will be kept enthralled sifting through an assortment of bee-eaters, pigeons, broadbills, laughingthrushes and leafbirds among many others. We then head northeast of Bangkok to explore the forested hillsides of Khao Yai National Park where we will be overwhelmed by a vast array of broadbills, hornbills, bulbuls, babblers and barbets. A short flight north takes us to Chang Mai, where we explore the mountain forests of Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s most famous birding site where a whole collection of uniquely Asian groups such as ioras, barwings, mesias, minlas, sibias, and niltavas will dazzle us with brilliant color and patterning. Hereafter we will bird through the mountains of Doi Angkhang on the border of Myanmar where we will continue finding representatives of unique groups including parrotbills, liocichlas, finchbills, bushchats and dazzling minivets. Other sites visited on our tour include Sab Sadou, Thaton and Doi Lang.

This tour is designed to take advantage of the incredible influx of migrants from the north, and an amazing compilation of resident Asian bird species. We will target a host of localized and range restricted species that might include such gems as Siamese Fireback, Great Hornbill, Banded Kingfisher, Silver-breasted and the huge Dusky Broadbill, the spectacular Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo, Blue and Eared Pittas, White-rumped Falcon, the stunning Black-headed and Great Slaty Woodpeckers, Ratchet-tailed Treepie, Grey Peacock-Pheasant, Green Cochoa, Black-throated and Spot-breasted Parrotbills, Scarlet-faced Liocichla, Giant Nuthatch and unbelievable Green Peafowl.

I had a wonderful trip to Thailand with Forrest as our leader. Every aspect of the Rockjumper trip surpassed expectations. From the pre trip support, wonderful fellow trip participants, amazingly delicious food, our helpful and kind Thai drivers, and of course Forrest, who has to be the best guide out there. His energy, enthusiasm and knowledge, along with a patient and friendly demeanor makes him a joy to be with. Kudos to the Rockjumper organization and I look forward to taking part in a future tour.

"Andre and our local guide were a terrific team. Travelling with the author of the Birds of Thailand was quite a treat. Andre catered to the needs of each participant. He was kind enough to lend me his extension cord which was quite helpful in hotels with few electric outlets. At the end of the tour he helped with transportation and overnight hotel prior to our flight out. Both guides were fantastic, skilled and capable birders. The food was plentiful and good. Overall this was a terrific trip with lots of beautiful sightings and many birds. We look forward to travelling with Rockjumper again."

"This was my first Rockjumper trip and I have never before done an extended birding bird out of Australia. I have nothing but praise for the whole operation. Our local guide & Forrest were fantastic and are both to be commended for their knowledge, expertise, patience & energy. Was wonderful having 2 experts with us."

Markus is brilliant, very friendly and outgoing, and hugely determined to get you to see all the birds ... He is truly genuine, a remarkable young man.

As for the Tour itself, it was excellent – Andre Bernon is a super leader, not just an excellent birder but very good with all the trip details, dealing with problems, staff etc. nothing was too much trouble. He is a thoroughly good bloke into the bargain. A great asset.
