Our Rwanda birding and gorillas extension is a fascinating add-on to our Kenya & Tanzania – birds & big game tours, and in a jam-packed week we cover this small nation from north to south. In the vast and beautiful Nyungwe Forest we will seek an incredible variety of Albertine Rift endemics including Strange Weaver, Dusky Crimsonwing, Rwenzori Batis, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Handsome Francolin, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Neumann’s, Grauer’s Swamp and Grauer’s Warblers, Purple-breasted, Regal and Blue-headed Sunbirds, Archer’s Ground Robin, Red-throated Alethe and Stripe-breasted Tit, while other notable and exceptionally localized targets include Rwenzori Turaco, Red-collared Babbler, Kungwe Apalis and even Shelley’s Crimsonwing and Albertine Owlet if we are really fortunate.
Last but certainly not least, we have the opportunity to track the large Virunga race of Mountain Gorilla. Rwanda’s gorillas are generally easier to find and observe in their mostly open bamboo habitat. We will not ignore the recent tragic history of Rwanda and we pay our respects at some of Rwanda’s genocide memorials. This tour makes a fabulous extension to our Kenya & Tanzania – birds & big game trips and offers a huge variety of very different birds and mammals.
Please note: As we cannot guarantee the availability of gorilla permits, we suggest you book very early if you would like to purchase one for the optional gorilla trek. As of early 2019, these permits are US$ 1500 per person (non-refundable).
