Malawi Birding Tours

Our Malawi birding tours are especially designed to target the many near-endemic birds found in the vast broad-leaved woodlands of Dzalanyama and on the high mountain plateaus of Nyika and Viphya to the north of the country. A feature of the broad-leaved Miombo woodlands in this region are the multi-species feeding flocks that create a riot of action. Specials we seek include Stierling’s Woodpecker, Souza’s Shrike, Olive-headed Weaver, Sharpe’s Akalat, Olive-flanked Robin-Chat and the stunning White-winged and endemic Yellow-throated Apalises. We also take time to explore Liwonde National Park for typical African megafauna and a variety of quality birds, including the gorgeous Böhm’s Bee-eater and Pel’s Fishing Owl. Other top targets include Babbling Starling, Brown-headed Barbet, the recently split Vincent’s Bunting, Fulleborn’s Boubou, Thyolo Alethe, Lilian’s Lovebird, Racket-tailed Roller, Arnot’s Chat, White-breasted Cuckooshrike, Yellow-browed Seedeater and the stunning Montane Widowbird!

Our South Luangwa extension visits this teeming “Big Five” reserve in eastern Zambia, famous for its magnificent game diversity and incredibly rich birdlife. With rare and elusive mammals such as Leopard and African Wild Dog being regularly encountered, this extension is the perfect addition to our Malawi adventure.

Few birders realize how rewarding and diverse Malawi’s birding and game viewing is, while many of the lodges we use are surprisingly luxurious. We invite you to join us as we uncover the joys of this attractive land-locked country of plateaus, rolling plains, lakes, mountains, forests and seemingly endless Miombo woodlands, on what promises to be a very comprehensive and thoroughly enjoyable safari!

What our clients say about tours to Malawi

  • Keith was excellent on everything and a wonderful source of information. Keith and Markus are my favorite tour guides ever (over 20 tours with different companies). Keith arranged daily events extremely well and was good at taking the temperature of the group in terms of energy levels and enthusiasm. He is also enormously patient.

I would not have considered going to Malawi as a priority until I’d seen about 7000 life birds (or about 10 years from now) and was very pleasantly surprised by the number of special species, good accommodations, a well thought out itinerary and good arrangements.

All in all a memorable and special experience even for somebody who regularly does bird tours.
