Spring in Bulgaria and Greece is a symphony of vibrant bird and wildlife. Our tour offers the opportunity to explore diverse habitats and witness the spectacle of migration. We search the Western Balkan Mountains, for powerful Golden Eagle against a backdrop of lush forests and rocky peaks before making our way into Greece. Here, Lake Kerkini transforms into a bustling avian hub, where Dalmatian Pelicans and Black Storks share the stage with a multitude of migrating warblers and raptors. The coastal wetlands around Maroneia provide a haven for a wide array of waterfowl and wading birds, and a spot of seawatching may reveal Yelkouan and Scopoli's Shearwaters. The Dadia Forest are raptor rich with Cinereous Vulture, Eurasian Griffon and Golden Eagles ruling the skies.
The rolling Sakar Hills are a rich tapestry of steppe and woodland, offering up the melodious Calandra Lark and the acrobatic European Roller. We’ll spend the last week of our tour venturing into the breathtakingly beautiful Rhodope & Rila Mountains in search of Wallcreeper, several vultures, partridges and woodpeckers.
Each location offers a unique blend of wildlife experiences, creating an unforgettable journey through the natural wonders of the Balkans.

Stu is a personable, helpful, and organized guide and was a pleasure to travel with. He was ready to help not only with finding and identifying birds, but also with little problems that popped up during our trip, as they so often do. Our local guide was likewise consistently friendly and helpful. My main concern is that on this trip, as on past Rockjumper trips, there doesn't seem to be any effort to vet the physical ability of potential group members, and as a result those of us who are prepared for the experience are held back by those who are physically not ready for it. I know that trips are rated on the website in regards to the level of exertion required, but this does not seem to help -- I have been on multiple tours with people who are not physically capable of maintaining a steady level of exertion while birding. This is not fair to those of us who are.
Glen ran an excellent tour for northern India and the Assam extension. He knows his birds and keeps guests informed about sightings as well as distinguishing bird features. His calming influence during times of stress helps the support staff and guests. We loved his enthusiasm and energy.
Both Andre and Uthai were remarkably tireless and effective in finding and identifying birds, including some of the most elusive species in Thailand. They also did a great job of organizing the logistics of the trip. Our meals were already prepared when we arrived at restaurants and all of the hotel arrangements were handled smoothly. We probably will not consider going on another standard Rockjumper trip. Birding steadily from dawn to after dark was a bit much, especially for 22 uninterrupted days. This pace is appropriate for most serious birders so I don’t fault the guides, but we plan to shift to a style of traveling in which we can set our own schedule. We might consider one of Rockjumper's relaxed tours, but we're not concerned about long hikes and muddy trails as long as the schedule allows for a little down time to read, reflect and recover.
Our trip to Madagascar was wonderful! Rockjumper did a great job with tour logistics, lodging, etc. Best of all was our guide! Lev Frid is an amazing birding/nature guide. He is incredibly good at not only hearing, identifying and finding the birds, but Lev is also able to quickly (and patiently) help all the tour participants get on the birds. In addition, he is just a really fun guy to be with. His sense of humor kept us laughing and his wealth of birding stories kept everyone interested and engaged during the trip. It was amazing to see the wildlife of Madagascar and having Lev as a guide made our experience that much better.
Another great tour. Between the leader, Paul Josop, and the local leader, Ashoka, it was a great team that got all the endemic and lots more. It was a fun trip and Paul handled the group dynamics very well. Fantastic trip!!
