Ryan Tyrer

Ryan grew up on a small farm in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. Here he developed a love for the natural world at an early age, and the progression to becoming a safari guide was practically guaranteed. He has travelled widely within Africa, and has spent over a decade working in the South African safari industry in several parts of the country.

  • Born into an adventurous family, Ryan was fortunate to embark on backpacking trips across South Africa and beyond, exploring vast swathes of East and South-Central Africa, including Gabon, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda covering diverse habitats found in Queen Elizabeth Park, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and the islands off the coast of Gabon as well as Zanzibar and Mafia Islands off Tanzania.

Over the past decade, Ryan has primarily worked as a safari guide, thoroughly enjoying his time in the field, engaging in hands-on conservation work, and sharing these experiences with many guests. This experience has honed many crucial elements of guest satisfaction such as patience, understanding, and knowing how to go above and beyond to ensure the best possible experience.

    What got you into birding?

Ryan's journey into birding began subtly. During his early days as a guide, he started paying closer attention to birds. One afternoon, while attempting to identify a "Little Brown Job", he became completely captivated. Soon after, he was on a mission to identify them all. Joining birding groups and traveling to see new species further ignited this passion. Today, birding sits firmly at the heart of his love for the wild.

What attracted you to a career in tourism?

A career in tourism was initially sparked during his school years, but only begain to develop further once he had spent time in Qatar as a personal trainer. The concrete jungle of Doha casued a yearning for home and the embrace of nature. Whilst he very much enjoyed working with people at the gym, he decided to rather pursue his long-held dream of becoming a safari guide, and has haven't looked back.

Do you have any other hobbies?

While birding is intricately intertwined with his work, it is also a cherished hobby. Ryan is also passionate about photography, particularly capturing wildlife and birds. His other hobbies include various sports such as rugby, cricket, and football. He also find immense enjoyment in fitness, particularly hiking, and as an avid reader, constantly striving to expand his personal library.

    Are you a lister?

Yes! Ryan maintains various bird lists, including those for home, work, specific countries and provinces, as well as year lists and yearly challenges. HIs list-making extends beyond birds, as he also keeps track of amphibians and is beginning to venture into the world of butterflies.

What are your strengths as a tour leader?

His strengths lie in an ability to actively listen and understand the needs of each person, tailoring his approach accordingly. Ryan is adept at balancing persistence with patience, both in the field and beyond. Sharing an infectious enthusiasm for our discoveries and ensuring that his guests feel welcome and prioritized, with a genuine love for what he does, are all qualities he strives to embody.

  • AP, South Africa - Eastern (Small Group) I 2026

JW, South Africa - Eastern (Small Group) II 2026

Ryan is an excellent tour guide and absolutely a top notch birder ! He is truly persistent when it comes to finding a bird . He adapts well to changing conditions . The accommodations were very nice . Each stop had a pleasant atmosphere . The food was great - too much good stuff ! My wife is gluten intolerant and each stop and restaurant tried their best to help her . Water was plentiful and welcome .

CA, South Africa - Cape Extension (Small Group) II 2026

The tour and birding was great. Ryan was an excellent tour guide, he knows his birds down cold, and most importantly the specific areas were they were most likely to be encountered. Accommodations and transport was excellent as well. A thermos with coffee and paper coffee cups would be a great addition (if possible) so we can cover ground. Otherwise, top notch trip.

LW, South Africa - Cape Extension (Small Group) II 2026

Ryan is an excellent tour guide and birder. He is an amazing person. You could not find a better, more knowledgeable guide than Ryan. He is truly a gem! He handles all kinds of situations with ease and his knowledge of South Africa is amazing. We had a wonderful time.

That been said, the trip was fantastic,so many birds and animals! I strongly recommand that trip! Ryan Tyrer was so knowledgeable,no maybe answers, come back with the good bird if in doubt, after verifying is sources,a true professional!

SI, Kenya & Tanzania - Birds & Big Game (Small Group) II 2026

The tour was great. The administration pre-tour was not. We received an itinerary that was backwards - starting in Arusha, whereas we started in Nairobi. We didn’t find out about where we were staying until very late, which made our own arrangements difficult. There were a lot of confusion about where we were staying in Nairobi, and we booked the BOMA Inn for two nights prior, thinking that was where we were staying but it wasn’t. But it was too late to change it to the BOMA. The itinerary featured a lot of driving which was wearing. The first jeep we had for Kenya was sub-standard. There were literally bits falling off the vehicle. The first thing we had to do is get new windscreen wipers put on which took about 30 min. The back seats were very tight and the cushion on one was ripped and uncomfortable. When we got to Tanzania we had a brand new vehicle which was much better. I don’t agree with treating the drivers differently to the guide. I think this is a very colonial approach and segregating them to different accommodation and meals is discriminatory, given the work they do and the long days they work. On the positive side both drivers were excellent, particularly Kevin, the first driver who was an excellent birder. Ryan was an excellent guide. He was highly organised, helped us all to see the birds and was always pleasant and friendly. We would travel with him again. The accommodation was excellent, as was the food. Rockjumper is an expensive tour company relative to some others. It was our first time with Rockjumper and we would consider travelling with you again. Thanks to Ryan and the drivers for a very memorable experience. Suse
