This was a great tour, even better than the itinerary described, with a few surprise activities. I really enjoyed Alexander and felt I learned a lot about the birds and Honduras while with him.

Alexander Alvarado grew up western Honduras. He became interested in birds many years ago whilst working for a hotel located in this Mayan City, before taking a job at Macaw Mountain, a bird park and Nature Reserve located just outside of Copán. This in depth experience in treating birds opened window for his passion.

In 2006, Alex began investigating Honduran birds in different habitats, traveling across the country. Having considered the great diversity of species, he started his own business - initially offering birding tours to the Copan Ruinas Hacienda San Lucas areas. After attending multiple courses and increasing his experience across Honduras, Alex was elected the President of the Honduran Ornithological Association on 2013.
Alex now leads tours across the length and breadth of Central America and the Caribbean, covering both scheduled and tailor-made tours for Rockjumper in Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.

MS, Honduras 2021JC, Panama 2024
The team of Alex and Edwin is superb & unbeatable. Working as a team, they hear, find, locate and show us every bird. They operate cooperatively working the laser lights and scopes, so that all of us get to see the birds. Not they stay cool and calm so who were looking for the bird have time to locate it. Huge bonus is their delightful sense of humor.. We shared many a good laugh. Truly, a great trip!! Kudos !!
DB, Panama 2024Alex and local guide Edwin had excellent skills in locating birds using sound and sight. They found birds that seemed impossible to see. Forest birding doesn't always allow all the tour participants to see every bird. The accommodations were good to excellent.
JS, Panama 2024We thoroughly enjoyed this tour with Alex and Edwin leading us. They were both excellent guides and ensured we got the maximum out of the trip. The reduced number of hotel changes made for the 'relaxed ' sense of the tour but the birding was full on . Edwin was also a very good driver. Thank you to all involved. We hope you do some more relaxed trips !
LR, Belize, Guatemala & Honduras - Ultimate 2025Alex was one of the best tour guides I have ever traveled with. He did an excellent job of managing the trip logistics and a superb job of finding birds. He is highly knowledgeable, pleasurable to be with and I would gladly travel with him again. We particularly enjoyed staying at Birds Eye View Lodge and at Pico Bonito. Walt Vennum
SW, Belize, Guatemala & Honduras - Ultimate 2025This tour was originally proposed as birds and Mayan ruins and at least 6 of the 8 of us signed up for that reason, to see birds but also explore the extensive Mayan ruins of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. I recommend that you continue to advertise it as such. The current title 'Belize, Guatemala, Honduras--Ultimate 2025' does not do the tour justice. Alex was the perfect guide for a tour combining birds and Mayan ruins. He has vulcan hearing and can spot and identify birds across a range of habitats. He exceeded my expectations by actually locating my prize bird, a Jabiru through his extensive local contacts. We both saw birds and learned about their habitats and behaviors. Importantly Alex is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Mayan ruins and took us to several that were not originally on the tour at our request. Such sites are often full of birds as well as ruins and satisfied our desires to be able to explore both and see a variety of ruin types from those with immense structures such as Tikal (many tourists) to other more administrative sites with very different buildings (and few or no tourists). We worked hard and a great time. I was particularly interested in seeing woodpeckers and woodcreepers as well as the Jabiru and Alex went out of his way to help me see them. Alex is from Honduras and in Honduras, he arranged several times for us to have special lunches made with traditional ingredients. All of us enjoyed that aspect as well.
JD, Honduras - Escape to Central America (Small Group) 2026This trip was outstanding thanks to the skillful, awesome leader Alex. The size of this tour was perfect. Alex has great energy and his birding by ear skills are outstanding and Alex helped all of us to see the birds he heard. I appreciated Alex’s historical knowledge of his country. Alex was extremely prompt and our time was very well balanced and well utilized. I loved the river float and i LOVED every lunch we had when we were “in the field”. ALex added so much to the trip due to his enthusiasm for reptiles and insects which made our night walks outstanding. I appreciate the timing of coffee breaks that Alex suggested between destinations. Pico Bonito Lodge was nice, clean and the grounds were beautiful. I would appreciate if RJ would speak to PB lodge manager ( Christian?) and suggest to him that the bird platforms are cleaned and fruit is placed upon them so guests could enjoy the birds. The meals and the staff at PB were outstanding but the Lodge manager seemed disengaged. I would have liked to have seen the Hummingbird feeders cleaned and refreshed at least once during our stay. I would suggest a day or two less at the PB lodge and in exchange, we travel to the Highland area for a night or 2. This was my 2nd RJ trip and it was as outstanding as my first! I will continue to travel with RJ and I will seek out the expert and awesome Alex upon my next trip to Central America. I invited my brother on this trip as my eldest brother’s first birding tour. Alex and the other guests made this trip a great experience for both of us. Thank you for all you do for the birds and a special shout out to Alex!!
The tour leader and local guides were friendly and patient. They worked hard to find the birds they thought we should see and made sure everyone got a look at each bird. I was especially impressed by their enthusiasm. They must have seen these birds numerous times before but acted as though it was the first time. Given the political issues we had to deal with, I dont think any other tour company could have managed the situation as well as Rockjumper. Finally, a special mention to our driver, Louis, he did a terrific job under difficult circumstances. A wonderful experience, much fun.
