As we see out 2023 into 2024, we shift our attention to times of relaxation, catching up with friends and family and relishing magical moments. Just like this one captured by Tom Girman and Joe DiAndrea while on a Tailor-made Rockjumper Namibia tour with Keith Valentine. Using a slow shutter speed and a wide-open aperture, this stunning image was captured of the Milky Way, perfectly combined with Namibia’s granite boulders, dimly lit by the glow of a warm campfire. Moments like these don’t often get the limelight as they are overshadowed by the plethora of rare and exciting birds and wildlife seen on our tours, but they are equally as important, it’s these in-between excitement, peaceful moments that allow us to reflect on the excitement of the day and fully take in and appreciate the day's experiences.

This image also captures the essence of what makes Namibia an excellent destination to visit, the true African wilderness, away from the hustle and bustle. Not to mention the exceptional opportunities for wildlife sightings, with massive African Elephants making the most of the little water they can find, Lions resting in the shade of a tree or an excellent list of bird species to be found. The likes of Slaty Egret, Pel’s Fishing Owl, Bare-cheeked Babbler, Rockrunner, Ruppell’s Korhaan, Dune Lark, Violet Wood Hoopoe, Herero Chat, Burchell’s Sandgrouse, Ruppell’s Parrot, White-tailed Shrike and many more are all likely to present themselves on our Namibia tours.

From our team at Rockjumper, we would like to wish you all the best for the festive season and an excellent year ahead, full of lifers and memorable moments, just like the one above.
