Often referred to as the “Tibet of South America,” Bolivia is a landlocked country known for its soaring altitudes, dramatic landscapes, and strong indigenous traditions. Towering peaks, deep canyons, and vast, sparsely explored habitats create a rugged and rewarding setting for exploration. Bolivia also has the highest percentage of indigenous peoples in the Americas, offering a rich and immersive cultural experience. The country’s identity is shaped by a vibrant blend of Spanish influence and enduring indigenous heritage, with Quechua and Aymara communities proudly maintaining their languages and traditions.
Endemic to Bolivia, the Critically Endangered Blue-throated Macaw was once feared extinct. Its rediscovery began when individuals appeared in the international pet trade, suggesting that wild populations might still survive. This proved true in 1992, when remnant populations were found in remote regions of the country. Initially the population was estimated to be only 50 birds but recent surveys have estimated that 300 birds are remaining and they are found in a more extensive area than previously thought.
This striking macaw resembles the more widespread Blue-and-yellow Macaw but can be distinguished by its blue throat patch, reddish facial skin, and entirely blue wings. It inhabits the seasonally flooded grasslands of El Beni, where it forages mainly on motacú palm fruit and nests in cavities high in palm trees.
Bolivia offers birders a true sense of adventure, with vast, seldom-visited habitats that hold some of South America’s rarest species, including the Blue-throated Macaw. This fascinating country blends indigenous heritage with access to wild, little-explored environments. In addition to the Blue-throated Macaw, Bolivia is home to a wealth of special species, such as Bolivian Recurvebill, Unicolored Thrush, Orinoco Goose, Masked Antpitta, Pearly-breasted Conebill, Humaita Antbird, Johannes's Tody-Tyrant, and Western Striolated Puffbird.
For travelers seeking rare species, cultural depth, and untamed wilderness, Bolivia promises a journey like no other.
