Image of the Month May 2026: Crested Ibis

China is a land of immense scale and extraordinary natural diversity, where snow-capped mountains, bamboo forests, subtropical woodlands and vast river systems combine to support one of Asia’s richest avifaunas. Among the country’s most remarkable birds is the elegant Crested Ibis, a species that represents one of the greatest conservation success stories in the bird world. Once widespread across East Asia, the species declined catastrophically during the twentieth century due to habitat destruction, agricultural intensification and hunting. By the early 1980s, Crested Ibis was believed to be on the brink of extinction, with only seven wild individuals known to survive in a remote part of Shaanxi Province in central China. Intensive conservation efforts followed, including habitat protection, captive breeding and community involvement, and today the species has recovered sufficiently to once again become a symbol of hope for bird conservation in Asia.
Graceful and unmistakable, Crested Ibis is clothed in delicate white plumage that flushes with soft salmon-pink tones during the breeding season, complemented by crimson facial skin and elongated ornamental plumes trailing from the nape. Their appearance is matched by equally elegant behaviour, as pairs glide over rice paddies, wetlands and river valleys with slow wingbeats before descending to feed on fish, frogs, crustaceans and aquatic invertebrates. Historically revered in Chinese and Japanese culture, the species has become an enduring emblem of harmony between people and nature, particularly in landscapes where traditional farming practices continue to support healthy wetland ecosystems.
Our China departures in 2027 and 2028 provide excellent opportunities to experience this iconic species alongside an exceptional supporting cast of East Asian specialities. Our China Highlights tours and relaxed Sichuan Highlights departures combine spectacular scenery with a rich diversity of pheasants, laughingthrushes, parrotbills and rosefinches, while our Southeast China itineraries explore lush subtropical forests rich in endemic and range-restricted birds. The dedicated China Bird Photography Tour offers particularly rewarding opportunities for capturing species such as Crested Ibis in beautiful natural settings, alongside dazzling birds including Golden Pheasant, Cabot’s Tragopan, Silver Pheasant and numerous colourful forest passerines.
Beyond the birding, China offers a fascinating blend of ancient culture, dramatic mountain landscapes and world-renowned cuisine, making these tours as rewarding culturally as they are ornithologically. From misty bamboo forests echoing with laughingthrush song to serene wetlands where waders patrol shallow water in the early morning light, China remains one of Asia’s most compelling and rapidly emerging birding destinations.
