Overview

Our Emperors South Pole tour takes you deep into the ‘last frontier’. Vast and inhospitable to humans, Antarctica it is both brutal and delicate. The world’s largest desert, it holds almost three quarters of the world’s fresh water. Historically, Antarctica probably supported the largest concentration of wildlife known on earth, virtually wiped out by sealers, whalers and fishermen in a matter of decades in the early 19th century. A tour to Antarctica, and more specifically the South Pole is no mean feat even today, though certainly more comfortable and attainable that it was over 100 years ago when Roald Amundsen, Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton vied to be the first to reach it.

‘Experience of a lifetime’ is an often over-used and under-defined phrase, but we believe this short tour will surpass even your greatest expectation of just what it does mean. We depart the ‘Mother City’ of Cape Town on-board an opulent Gulfstream private jet, touching down on the Antarctic massive in a little over 5 hours. Based at a private camp, we explore our immediate surrounds as well as making a visit to an immense Emperor Penguin colony. A visit to the South Pole will put you in exalted company, as one of the very few humans to have ever stood here.

Adam Walleyn did a fantastic job organising the rest of the tour when Erik had to leave due to illness. I really appreciated his hard work and determination; for example: even though he had never been to Samoa before, his logistical work enabled us to get great views of some very difficult and unexpected species (Samoan Triller, Blue-grey Noddy).

Our questions were always answered with clarity and accuracy. There were no surprises as a result... This trip was a wonderful and unique experience for me. I actually felt renewed and revitalized when it was over. Thanks to everyone for an experience of a lifetime!

Andre, our guide, has such an infectious nature, which had a huge positive effect on our stay. His incredible knowledge of birds was indeed humbling. A birder's paradise and a guide passionate about birds and nature - what more could one ask for?

The game drives were fantastic, André’s knowledge and attention to detail could certainly be used as the benchmark for all lodges. We were often stopping to wipe away the tears of laughter and the times spent on the drives with André will certainly be remembered. Hats off to you André, you really made our trip!!!

Adam is an extremely hard working, energetic and enthusiastic person who is able to remain calm and collected under extreme pressure and is always willing to help and assist anyone in need. His ability to find elusive birds for clients is legendary and almost miraculous. He is not feint-hearted and never daunted by challenging circumstances.
