The South West corner of Western Australia is a birding and ecological hotspot, hosting a superbly high diversity of endemic plant, animal and bird species. This short extension to our Eastern Australia birding tour concentrates on south-western Australia’s endemic bird species and other wildlife and commences in the state’s capital of Perth, situated on the Swan River. During this Australia birding tour, we explore a range of habitats from the eucalypt forests of the Darling Ranges to the extensive woodlands of Dryandra, the Stirling Ranges, semi-arid mallee woodlands and the rugged windswept heathlands of the south coast. We expect to encounter all twelve endemic bird species plus several near-endemics and we can anticipate a trip total of between 120-150 species. We also hope to see several fabulous mammals such as Short-beaked Echidna, Western Grey Kangaroo and Southern Right Whale.
Emu, Pink-eared, Musk & Blue-billed Duck, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Painted Buttonquail, Hooded Plover, Banded Lapwing, Pacific Gull, Red-tailed, Short-billed & Long-billed Black Cockatoo, Western Corella, Western Rosella, Elegant, Red-capped & Rock Parrot, Western Ringneck, Noisy Scrubbird, Rufous Treecreeper, Red-winged, Splendid & Blue-breasted Fairywren, Southern Emu-wren, Western Fieldwren, Western Wattlebird, Western Bristlebird, White-cheeked & Swan River (split from White-naped) Honeyeater, Western Spinebill, Scarlet, Red-capped, Western Yellow & White-breasted Robin, Western Whipbird, Crested Shrike-Tit, Red-eared Firetail, Western Thornbill

I have waited a while before responding. Firstly I should like to say this was one of the best birding trips I have ever been on.(20+ and counting) Before I went I was concerned that 12 clients were too many. However Greg worked extremely hard with Hu and Richard to try to get everyone on every bird. He quickly summed up our respective birding abilities and responded to that with the help he provided. Thankfully there were very few 'narrow jungle paths' where the number inevitably restricted opportunities. I particularly appreciated the regular ebird lists which left me more time to concentrate on the actual birds and not scribbling in my notebook.
Erik Forsyth went above and beyond to give personal attention to each participant. How does he do it? Lack of sleep and a packed itinerary would challenge the best guide, but he seems to always be positive and light-hearted. Cracking dry jokes and comments – loved it!
Glen was excellent at finding the birds and keeping track of who had not yet seen specific birds. By the end of the tour there were very few birds not seen by all in the group.
It was a fantastic trip. Very satisfying and Angus did a great job : he really showed us the birds and took great care that we had everything we wanted and were able to enjoy our tour.
Steve Davidson is a superb guide. He has a vast knowledge of Australian birds, other wildlife, and plants. He has a keen ear and I appreciated that he described what he was hearing. We had challenges in terms of Covid and flooding, and he very responsibly addressed both issues. I truly don't know how he had the stamina to guide, drive the extra miles on detours, and organize the needed diversions from the itinerary.
