Azerbaijan is a hidden gem for birdwatchers in the Western Palearctic. Located in the Caucasus region, it is a crossroads for a variety of birds from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. This small country has recorded over 400 species, many of which are rare or difficult to see elsewhere. This is a land of major contrasts, with a mix of high-altitude mountain ranges, arid steppe, and desert. We’ll be birding across much of the country, from the Greater Caucasus Mountain range running along almost all the country's northern border, to the Lesser Caucasus, Talish Mountains and the exclave, or autonomous republic of Nakhchivan.

We will be searching for several Western Palearctic range-restricted species such as Caspian Tit, Asian Crimson-winged, Desert and Mongolian Finches, Red-tailed, Finch´s & Eastern Black-eared Wheatears, White-tailed Lapwing, Bimaculated & Turkestan Short-toed Larks; White-throated Robin, Armenian and Pallas's Gulls, Black Francolin, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Red-fronted Serin and Menetries’s Warbler. We’ll also be targeting three near endemics; Caspian and Caucasian Snowcocks as well as Caucasian Grouse. We’ll search for other key area species in Great Rosefinch, Güldenstädt's Redstart, Mountain Chiffchaff and Radde’s Accentor.

What our clients say about us

Robert Williams
EW, Guyana - Birds & Wildlife (Relaxed) 2026

What a great experience! Everything was as you told us in the pre-departure literature, so we were well-prepared. Rob was an excellent tour leader. His vast experience in conservation, core knowledge of birds and bird behavior, and his enthusiasm was generously shared with the group. He modeled proper trail behavior and made sure that everyone “saw the bird”. The local guides were top-notch and took good care of the group. I also learned so much from the better birders in the group. Highly recommended!

Dušan Brinkhuizen
CC, Puerto Rico - Forgotten Greater Antilles 2026

We saw all 19 endemics as well as all of those where splits may be likely in the future. Dušan is a tireless guide. Never gives up for the best view. Our local guide, Alcides, has astonishing eyes and ears and knows every inch of his island! Cannot imagine a better local guide. Also, wish to put in a good word for our driver to and from the airport, Carlos. Please keep Carlos on board. Great trip. My shortest birding trip and, I learned, too short for me—could have stayed longer.

Robert Wilcox
ED, Guatemala - Specialities of Central America 2026

This tour group was very eclectic but really worked well together. The leaders including the van driver did an exceptional job.

Glen Valentine
MW, Indonesia - Buru Extension II 2025

The Buru extension following the RWPI Cruise was fantastic. I feel sorry for those on the main tour that did not take this extension. The birds were fabulous, Glen was a superb guide, and the scenery great. Glen did a great job trying to get us on all the birds, even the most rare and elusive. Again, flexibility was a key element in the success of the trip. I can't think of anything about the trip that could be done to improve it.

Quinton Paul Josop
DB, India - Southern: Endemics of the Western Ghats (Small Group) 2026

The tour structure and arrangements were first class. Leaders were very good and quite knowledgable. I thought Paul was energetic a d really on the birds. Would gladly travel with him again. It was great fun and we got nearly every endemic on the trip. Great fun!!
