Brazil is one of the world’s great wildlife destinations, home to an astonishing diversity of habitats ranging from the vast Amazon Rainforest to the Pantanal wetlands and Atlantic Forest. For birders and naturalists alike, few countries can rival the sheer abundance and variety of species found here. Humanity took one look at this biological masterpiece and still decided parking lots were the peak of civilization. Extraordinary judgment.

Our Amazon Rainforest Birding Extension takes us deep into the southern Amazon to the exceptional Pousada Thaimaçu, a remote lodge overlooking the rapids of the Rio São Benedito. Surrounded by pristine rainforest, rivers, wetlands, and patches of savanna, this region supports more than 550 bird species and has quickly become one of Brazil’s premier Amazonian birding destinations.

Exploring a network of forest trails, river systems, and a spectacular 40-metre canopy tower, we will search for an exciting range of Amazonian specialties including Bald Parrot, Razor-billed Curassow, Zigzag Heron, Cryptic Forest Falcon, Curl-crested Aracari, Pompadour Cotinga, Pavonine Quetzal, and Amazonian Umbrellabird. Army ant swarms may reveal sought-after skulkers such as Bare-eyed and Xingu Scale-backed Antbirds, while colourful mixed flocks enliven the canopy and forest edge throughout the day.

The region is equally rewarding for mammals, with opportunities for Giant River Otter, South American Tapir, Capybara, Tayra, and several species of monkeys including the localized, Red-nosed Bearded Saki. Comfortable accommodation, excellent food, exciting night excursions, and outstanding birding opportunities combine to make this a truly unforgettable Amazonian experience.

What our clients say about us

Robert Williams
LM & JM, Brazil 2018

Rob Williams was knowledgeable about all kinds of animals, and went out of his way to point out lizards he spotted that I would otherwise have missed. I greatly appreciate that. Some of the best moments on the trip for me included sightings of Jaguars, otters, Crab-eating Fox, agoutis, Guinea Pigs, Capybaras and Tegu Lizards. Iguazú Falls was spectacular.

Very productive and relaxing tour

Lev Frid
LW - Pantanal 2022

The tour was fantastic and both of our guides were excellent. We enjoyed traveling with Lev. He is so enthusiastic! He is an excellent birding guide and also very knowledgeable about the natural history of the animals we saw. That made the experience even more enjoyable. He worked very hard to enable us to see some of the trickier birds, like the Zigzag Heron that was hiding in the trees. It turns out, he even speaks 'zigzag', as he carried on a 10 min conversation (back and forth calls) with the heron, trying to coax him into a better view. It was wonderful having a local guide, Leo, on this trip as well. He added a lot to the birding experience, was essential for dealing with logistics, and had a wealth of knowledge about the history of Brazil and the places we visited, that made it an even more interesting trip. Well Done Rockjumper!!
