Brazil, one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, is a dream destination for general naturalists, photographers, and birders alike. Home to swathes of Amazon Rainforest, the vast majority of the continent's savannah and endemic-rich Atlantic Rainforest, and the highly celebrated Pantanal, few destinations can offer such great variety and abundance in such a short space of time.

Combining a visit to two of these great regions - the Pantanal, weighing in as the world's largest freshwater wetland, and the Cerrado, a true icon of Brazil's fascinating habitats - our main tour packs in an incomparable mix of superb photography opportunities, productive birding, and great wildlife-viewing. Indeed, sampling a fantastic cross-section of the Pantanal's 250 000km² (96 500mi²) of woodland, swathing rivers, and shallow wetlands, on top of the bird rich Cerrado in the Chapada dos Guimarães area, our 14-day itinerary is quite simply an unbeatable foray into the photographic wonders of this prolific area.

Highlights

  • Seeing and experiencing Iguazú Falls and exploring the grand network of trails and viewpoints that criss-cross this incredible protected area
  • Visit feeders that provide fabulous opportunities to photograph many of the regions endemic and special birds
  • This itinerary offers the very best chances of photographing one of South America’s most iconic big cats - the Jaguar
  • Exploring one of the greatest wetlands on the planet - the vast Pantanal
  • Opportunities to see and photograph a variety of Brazil’s most celebrated wildlife including South American Tapir, Giant Anteater, Giant River Otter, Hyacinth Macaw, Red-legged Seriema, and Sunbittern
  • Boat trips along various rivers, backwaters and oxbow lakes where the photographic opportunities are exceptional.

Tour Pace & Walking

Moderate. Suitable for all birding / wildlife interest levels and mobility capabilities. Our Bird Photo Tours are a hybrid between our Classic birding tours and dedicated photographic tours. You don’t have to be a professional photographer or have the biggest lens; this is for everyone with an interest in photography and birding. Whether you’re using a bridge camera or the latest body and prime lens, our aims are the same. • These tours are not aimed at seeing the most species possible on the route, rather taking time to photograph key targets and any other interesting species we may find. Naturally, the overall species list will be lower than a comparable birding focused tour. • Whilst we may use blinds, feeders and hide setups on some of these tours, we will not be spending an entire day nor even several hours fixed in one spot. • These tours are suitable for photographers who prefer opportunistic photography over entire days in a hide. • Our leaders will assist in helping everyone secure good photographic opportunities and advise as much as they can on camera setup. However, they are not professional photographic tour leaders.

Accommodation

Comfortable to very comfortable.

Ease of Birding

Most species provide good visuals in open conditions. Slightly more challenging on the Iguazu Ext.

Other Attractions

Jaguar search by cruising the waterways of the Pantanal, night spotting for birds and mammals, scenic waterfall, visiting the Geodesic centre of South America, Argentine Black-and-white Tegu; Broad-snouted Caiman.

Photographic Opportunities

Good to excellent. Lots of feeders & opportunities by boat.

What our clients say about us

Lev Frid
LW - Pantanal 2022

The tour was fantastic and both of our guides were excellent. We enjoyed traveling with Lev. He is so enthusiastic! He is an excellent birding guide and also very knowledgeable about the natural history of the animals we saw. That made the experience even more enjoyable. He worked very hard to enable us to see some of the trickier birds, like the Zigzag Heron that was hiding in the trees. It turns out, he even speaks 'zigzag', as he carried on a 10 min conversation (back and forth calls) with the heron, trying to coax him into a better view. It was wonderful having a local guide, Leo, on this trip as well. He added a lot to the birding experience, was essential for dealing with logistics, and had a wealth of knowledge about the history of Brazil and the places we visited, that made it an even more interesting trip. Well Done Rockjumper!!

Stephan Lorenz
PM, Brazil 2019

I had the very best time on tour with Stephan. He is an excellent leader and a lovely, kind human being. In terms of his technical ability as a birding leader, his eyesight and hearing skills are excellent, which coupled with his first class fieldcraft and ID skills, meant that we saw/heard over 500 species during our tour. He also gelled well with the local guide Caio , so that in terms of finding, IDing and showing the birds to the group, we were treated to splendid views of our target species plus many many 'bonus birds' too. Stephan was also very patient with group members, some of whom for a variety of personal reasons, were less able to see the birds than the majority of the group-so that wherever possible-every group member who wanted to, had the opportunity to see every bird.

Forrest Rowland
BM, Brazil 2018

A Fantastic experience!! Considerably better than I had expected. Guides were fantastic!! And the inclusion of local Brazilian guide - Leo - was a real plus. He worked great together with Forrest Rowland, and his knowledge of the country and the vegetation was a real plus. The mammals and other critters were a real plus to the tour. The facilities, driver, and van were also great! Overall, this tour ranks among the top of the 7-8 birding tours I have ever taken, and Rockjumper is certainly a company I would highly recommend to others!!!

Dušan Brinkhuizen
PE, Brazil 2023

This was my second trip with Dusan and like the first trip, he made sure everyone was looked after to the best of his abilities and was always attentive to peoples differing needs. He worked extremely well with our local guide, who himself was attentive to everyone, and they both tried hard to get everyone onto the birds. No complaints to them whatsoever. I would be very happy to bird with Dusan again and probably will.

Robert Williams
LM & JM, Brazil 2018

Rob Williams was knowledgeable about all kinds of animals, and went out of his way to point out lizards he spotted that I would otherwise have missed. I greatly appreciate that. Some of the best moments on the trip for me included sightings of Jaguars, otters, Crab-eating Fox, agoutis, Guinea Pigs, Capybaras and Tegu Lizards. Iguazú Falls was spectacular.
