Nestled in the heart of Ecuador’s Amazon Basin, Sacha Lodge offers incredible access to one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. With just over 600 species recorded in the area, it is a premier destination for birders seeking both sheer diversity and a chance at several iconic South American species. Our tour is designed to explore the mosaic of micro-habitats that make up the Upper Amazon biome- ranging from varzea and terra firme forest to oxbow lakes and both a canopy tower and canopy walkway - maximizing our chances of encountering a remarkable array of avian life.
Among the many highlights we may encounter are Harpy Eagle, Hoatzin, Agami and Zigzag Herons, Grey-winged Trumpeter, Sungrebe, Scarlet, Blue-and-yellow, Chestnut-fronted and Red-bellied Macaws, Wire-crested Thorntail, Gould’s Jewelfront, Great and Long-tailed Potoos, White-throated, Yellow-throated and Channel-billed Toucans, Many-banded and Ivory-billed Aracaris, Green-and-rufous and American Pygmy Kingfishers, Gilded and Scarlet-crowned Barbets, Coppery-chested Jacamar, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Rusty-belted Tapaculo, Cinnamon Attila, Grey-tailed and Screaming Pihas, Golden-headed and Orange-crowned Manakins, Fiery-throated Fruiteater, Bare-necked Fruitcrow, Plum-throated and Spangled Cotingas, and an astounding diversity of antbirds, including Cocha Antshrike and Lunulated Antbird.

"This tour was great and Dusan was fabulous, an incredible birder, guide and person. I don't need to say more because I'm sure you've heard many accolades about him. It was a great tour though harder than I expected but I'm old and age makes a difference. I definitely would go again with Dusan. There was a disparity of physical abilities among the clients and Dusan handled the situation very well, taking care of the one person who could do the least physically and I think keeping her happy under the circumstances. This really speaks to his people skills. The three of us who were the weakest physically were the oldest. I was elated because I saw the oil birds and Sapayoa(s!!) and why I signed up not even considering the difficulty of canopy birding and what hilly jungle trails entailed. I'm so glad I went and would have hated being dissuaded. So thank you..."
This was our first birding tour and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The support from the tour leader, the ground staff, hotel, boat and lodge staff, local guides and families was exceptional. In particular we'd like to express our appreciation to Tuomas whose local and bird knowledge, combined with people skills made this a really memorable trip.
Dušan is an excellent field ornithologist with an encyclopaedic knowledge of bird song, taxonomy, and field identification marks. Ornithology is Dušan’s passion. He is also excellent with the clients – friendly, courteous, patient, and anxious that everyone sees all the birds and enjoys the tour. It was a great tour!
Our tour of the Choco cloud forest and the Eastern Andes paramo and cloud forest was superb. Our guide Dušan Brinkhuizen was amazing in his ability to find birds; he clearly has supernatural hearing and eyesight! He also was superb at making sure that everyone saw the birds. He truly worried about his clients and listened to their requests as to birds, landscapes and need for sleep. We saw spectacular landscapes far off the beaten path and got very good looks at birds in all habitats. An additional plus was our driver Dario who kept us safe on marginal roads. We look forward to our next Rockjumper trip.
All the participants were nice and helpful in pointing out birds to others. Dusan was great and worked hard to get everyone on a bird. His expertise makes you realize how much you miss! But it also helps know what to try to find.
