Gabon made international headlines in 2002 when the establishment of thirteen national parks placed more than 10,000 square miles of largely pristine wilderness under protection. Forming part of the vast Congo Basin, the country safeguards some of Africa’s most extensive remaining tropical rainforests, together with an extraordinary diversity of birds and mammals. Our journey takes us through a remarkable variety of habitats, beginning on the rolling grasslands, woodlands and gallery forests of the Bateké Plateau in south-eastern Gabon. From here, we continue into the magnificent lowland rainforests surrounding Makokou and Ivindo National Park, before concluding in Lopé National Park, where extensive forests give way to open grasslands and provide some of the finest wildlife-watching opportunities in Central Africa.

The birding promises to be exceptional, with an impressive selection of rare, elusive and highly sought-after Central African specialities. Among our many targets are Congo Serpent Eagle, Long-tailed Hawk, Lyre-tailed Honeyguide, Black and Plumed Guineafowls, Finsch’s Francolin, Yellow-throated Cuckoo, Black-headed Bee-eater, Bare-cheeked Trogon, Fiery-breasted Bushshrike, Rufous-bellied Helmetshrike, Rachel’s and Red-bellied Malimbes, Woodhouse’s Antpecker, Yellow-bellied and White-spotted Wattle-eyes, Congo Moor Chat, Black-chinned Weaver and Black-collared Bulbul. The forests around Makokou and Ipassa are particularly rewarding, supporting an astonishing diversity of forest birds, many of which are extremely difficult to encounter elsewhere in Africa.

Mammals are another major attraction, and Gabon remains one of the continent’s most important refuges for large rainforest wildlife. We stand good chances of encountering Forest Elephant, Forest Buffalo and the wonderfully distinctive Red River Hog, while the forests also support an impressive diversity of primates. Although considerably more difficult to observe, possibilities include Chimpanzee, Western Lowland Gorilla and the extraordinary Mandrill. With vast tracts of relatively undisturbed wilderness, an abundance of exciting wildlife and remarkably varied habitats, Gabon offers a truly memorable exploration of one of Africa’s least-visited natural treasures.

Due to reciprocal visa restrictions issued by Gabon on US citizens, this tour is currently available to non-US participants only. Bookings from US citizens cannot be accepted until the travel ban has been lifted. [Nov 2026].

Tour Pace & Walking

DIFFICULT: This is a high-intensity “mega” tour designed for passionate listers and serious birders who enjoy a fast-paced schedule. Due to its demanding nature, it’s not recommended for avid photographers, inexperienced birders, or anyone with mobility or health limitations.

Moderate to demanding. Not suitable for novice birders, dedicated photographers, or guests with mobility challenges. Our Mega tours are very fast-paced birding adventures designed for the dedicated lister and serious birder. The focus of the tour is to see as many of the endemics and area specials as possible in our given time. In order to cover the necessary route to maximise the species list we tend to spend a single night at most sites and travel large distances. There is very little down time aside from that spent driving from one site to the next. These tours are not suitable for dedicated or avid photographers; inexperienced or new birders; as well as anyone with serious mobility or health challenges.

Accommodation

Variable. Basic at Léconi to comfortable.

Ease of Birding

Moderate. Primarily forest birding with several low-density species.

Number of Species Expected

300 - 320

Other Attractions

Magnificent pristine forest, some of the least explored wilderness in Africa

Photographic Opportunities

Worthwhile, good on Loango Ext. No dedicated hides. Platform at Langoué Baï.

What our clients say about us

David Hoddinott
CL & RL, Gabon 2018

David Hoddinott, with his extensive experience, dedication to the birding task at hand, enthusiasm, and robust sense of humour, was again an excellent lead guide.

André Bernon
CL & RL, Gabon 2018

Andre Bernon did an excellent job as the second guide. We were impressed with his birding capabilities and knowledge, his friendliness and humour, and his dedication as well. We look forward to being guided by him in Ghana next year if things work out as planned.

Glen Valentine
RB, Gabon

Glen was great! His steady, unflappable leadership was the best and he got us on some terrific birds, never stopped trying, always looking. At the same time, he handled logistics very well and always with good humour. His enthusiasm for all things in nature and thoughtful attentiveness to the group made this a special trip.
