Few places on Earth stir the imagination quite like East Africa. Vast golden savannas stretching to the horizon, snow-capped mountains rising above elephant-filled plains, endless herds of wildebeest and zebra, and some of the most spectacular birdlife on the planet combine to create the quintessential African safari experience.
This unforgettable journey explores the very best of Kenya and Tanzania, from the elephant-rich woodlands of Tarangire and the wildlife-packed floor of the Ngorongoro Crater to the legendary Serengeti, where immense herds roam beneath vast African skies. We continue north into Kenya to experience the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, the forests of Mount Kenya, and the arid wilds of Samburu, home to a remarkable suite of birds and mammals found nowhere else.
Alongside East Africa’s legendary mammals, we will seek out some of the continent’s most charismatic birds. Secretarybirds stalk the grasslands, Southern Ground Hornbills stride purposefully across the savanna, Kori Bustards command the plains, and brilliant Superb Starlings and lovebirds illuminate the acacia woodlands. Wetlands host flamingos, cranes and storks, while the arid bush country produces a dazzling cast of dry-country specialists, including the unforgettable Vulturine Guineafowl and Golden-breasted Starling.
Designed to maximize both birding and wildlife viewing, this tour combines world-class safari destinations, comfortable accommodations and expertly guided exploration. From elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro and predators on the Serengeti plains to Secretarybirds, Southern Ground Hornbills and brilliant Superb Starlings, every day promises memorable encounters in one of the world's great natural theatres.
Join us for an extraordinary adventure through the heart of East Africa, where spectacular birds, iconic mammals and breathtaking landscapes combine to create a safari experience unlike any other.

UNDEMANDING: This tour is ideal for birders and wildlife enthusiasts of all experience levels. It’s suitable for most mobility levels and offers a relaxed pace, ensuring an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Undemanding. Suitable for birders and wildlife enthusiasts of all experience levels. Minimal physical exertion is required.
Comfortable throughout. Most accommodations are of a high standard, with quality safari lodges and tented camps. One lodge more rustic, reflecting its location.
Undemanding. Most target species are observed in open habitats and from vehicles, providing generally excellent viewing conditions. Limited forest and forest-edge birding.

Excellent. Outstanding opportunities for bird, mammal, landscape and safari photography from vehicles and lodge grounds. No dedicated hides.
The tour was great. The administration pre-tour was not. We received an itinerary that was backwards - starting in Arusha, whereas we started in Nairobi. We didn’t find out about where we were staying until very late, which made our own arrangements difficult. There were a lot of confusion about where we were staying in Nairobi, and we booked the BOMA Inn for two nights prior, thinking that was where we were staying but it wasn’t. But it was too late to change it to the BOMA. The itinerary featured a lot of driving which was wearing. The first jeep we had for Kenya was sub-standard. There were literally bits falling off the vehicle. The first thing we had to do is get new windscreen wipers put on which took about 30 min. The back seats were very tight and the cushion on one was ripped and uncomfortable. When we got to Tanzania we had a brand new vehicle which was much better. I don’t agree with treating the drivers differently to the guide. I think this is a very colonial approach and segregating them to different accommodation and meals is discriminatory, given the work they do and the long days they work. On the positive side both drivers were excellent, particularly Kevin, the first driver who was an excellent birder. Ryan was an excellent guide. He was highly organised, helped us all to see the birds and was always pleasant and friendly. We would travel with him again. The accommodation was excellent, as was the food. Rockjumper is an expensive tour company relative to some others. It was our first time with Rockjumper and we would consider travelling with you again. Thanks to Ryan and the drivers for a very memorable experience. Suse
I've never been on a safari trip so I had no way of knowing what was involved. Due to my age (83) and slight incapacity (I use a cane, aka "stick," to maintain balance) the trip was more challenging than I had anticipated. But Stuart Elsom, our guide, and Jack, our expert driver and expert birder, made accommodations that made it possible for me to undertake and get the most out of the experience. 342 life list birds! All in all, an unforgettable experience. Thank you for the wonderful birding experience. I will definitely recommend Rockjumper tours to my younger friends and family members.
This trip far exceeded my expectations. Our guide, Greg de Klerk, was excellent in every way. He took the time to actually teach us about bird and animal behavior. When other tour vehicles were speeding away, we got to sit and really learn. Also our driver, Martin, was superb -- an excellent driver who navigated the rutted roads with great skill, but also proved himself to be an excellent spotter and birder. Greg and Martin made a wonderful team. The selection of game reserves that we visited on this trip was perfect, especially for me as a first-timer. I felt I got an excellent overview of the Kenyan countryside. Our accommodations were all comfortable, but some were better than others. I loved the Wildebeest Eco-Lodge in Nairobi -- a wonderful introduction to the country. Castle Forest felt magical, and even the annoyance of having only one plug per room did not dampen my enthusiasm. The Sopa Lodge at Sambura was comfortable and the staff were very accommodating; I just wish the doors and windows had been a bit tighter to keep out a startling array of large critters (crickets, spiders, and something very large with lots of legs), none of which appeared at any other location. The Lodge at Lake Nakuru was a treat and very unexpected. But I loved the low-key atmosphere of the Pride Inn at Masai Mara -- a lovely location, and again the staff were wonderful. I thought the food offered at the buffets in all our lodges was excellent overall. Thank you for a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go back.
This was one of the best five of the 53 guided birding tours I have taken! Paul Josop is not only a truly excellent local guide who knows African birds and their calls phenomenally well, but is also extremely pleasant to deal with, polite, supportive of all levels of participant birding skills and very thoughtful. Paul also has an infectious sense of humor: We all laughed a lot on this tour! He loves to teach participants the finer points of the biology of the animals and plants encountered on a tour; he also managed group dynamics very well. It is clear that Paul enjoys guiding and he is very focused on getting all of the tour participants onto every bird species we encountered: He is living proof of my dictum that ""A good local guide is a thing of joy"". Our two local guide/drivers, Roger in Tanzania and Edson in Kenya, were also excellent: They dealt very well with severely pot-holed African roads and erratic African drivers and traffic; they also pointed out very many birds and big game as we bounced through the national parks, reserves and paved roads, all filled with aggressive opposing traffic! They have my highest recommendation. However, I do urge the local tour operator, Tanzania Birding and Beyond, to have their Land Cruiser passenger seats rebuilt - they were singularly uncomfortable on our long drives. This Rockjumper tour has my highest recommendation for all levels of participants' birding skills.
Thank you for a wonderful experience! The tour exceeded my expectations. Andre Bernon is an extremely talented and knowledgeable guide. His eyes and ears are incredible and he is very thoughtful with his guests.
