We are not currently offering tours to Myanmar due to the ongoing security situation. Until conditions improve and safe, reliable travel is possible, the destination remains off our schedule. (01/01/2026)

Myanmar (Burma), saddled between Thailand and India, remains a poorly known birding destination, partly due to the difficulty in obtaining necessary permits for visiting the more interesting birding localities. However, with the help of our local operator, we have obtained permission to visit some of these seldom-visited hotspots, affording us the fantastic opportunity to bird in some of the planet’s least explored birding localities! To the north of Yangon (Rangoon) lie the Irrawaddy plains, holding not only important populations of declining waterbirds, but also supporting no less than four endemic species (the striking Hooded Treepie, Jerdon’s Minivet, White-throated Babbler and Burmese Bush Lark), which are confined to the dry forest and thorn scrub characteristic of this endemic-rich area. A good proportion of our time will be spent at the southern end of the eastern mountains known as the Chin Hills, in the vicinity of Mount Victoria. These mountains form part of the Eastern Himalayas, another endemic-rich bird region that also sustains several species only seen by a handful of intrepid birders during the past 40 years. These include White-browed Nuthatch, Mount Victoria Babax, Burmese Bushtit, Black-bibbed Tit and Chin Hills Wren-Babbler, among many others. Our final destinations will be in the southern Shan State, situated in the mountains of central Burma. Here we will explore the broad-leaved forests around Kalaw for Burmese Yuhina, another range-restricted species, and a good selection of other hill forest birds. Lastly, we will visit Inle Lake to search for the highly localised Jerdon’s Bush Chat and near-endemic Collared Myna, amongst a wealth of interesting wetland species.

What our clients say about us

Glen Valentine
PB, India - Northern: Birds & Tigers (Small Group) 2026

Great to have such an enthousiastic and patient leader in Glen Valentine.

Glen Valentine
MW, Indonesia - Remote West Papuan Islands Cruise II 2025

This was a great tour and exceeded all my very high expectations. Having both Glen and Dušan as leaders was like having two olympians on your high school basketball team. As usual, the vehicles were too small for me, but Glen kindly allowed me to ride in the seat with the most legroom when possible. I have subsequently found out that I am definitely an outlier as far as client size is concerned. The tour was well planned, the schedule and guides flexible enough to work around complications, and the logistics aside from a glitch picking us up at the airport well executed.

Robert Williams
RE, Guyana - Birds & Wildlife (Relaxed) 2026

An excellent trip. Good list of birds even though it was the relaxed itinerary. Rob’s recounting some of his excellent adventures was an added bonus.

Robert Wilcox
JM, Guatemala - Specialities of Central America 2026

Tour was wonderful. Loved everything. Very well organised and super localities. Anna is a superstar, she was invaluable

André Bernon
RA, Thailand - Asian Birding at its Best II 2025

Both Andre and Uthai were remarkably tireless and effective in finding and identifying birds, including some of the most elusive species in Thailand. They also did a great job of organizing the logistics of the trip. Our meals were already prepared when we arrived at restaurants and all of the hotel arrangements were handled smoothly. We probably will not consider going on another standard Rockjumper trip. Birding steadily from dawn to after dark was a bit much, especially for 22 uninterrupted days. This pace is appropriate for most serious birders so I don’t fault the guides, but we plan to shift to a style of traveling in which we can set our own schedule. We might consider one of Rockjumper's relaxed tours, but we're not concerned about long hikes and muddy trails as long as the schedule allows for a little down time to read, reflect and recover.
