Holding some of the last remaining large tracts of pristine Atlantic Lowland Forest, cerrado savannas, grasslands and most of the vast thorny Chaco, Paraguay appeals as an excellent introduction to Neotropical birding, fantastic photographic opportunities and home to an interesting array of mammals. What’s more, this is a vast country with few inhabitants, and nowhere is this more noticeable than in the chaco, for many, the major attraction of the country. We’ll search for a handful of range-restricted species such as Strange-tailed and Cock-tailed Tyrants and Russet-winged Spadebill as well as encounter members of several core South America families with Greater Rhea, Red-legged Seriema, Black-capped Donacobius and Southern Screamer.
Strange-tailed & Cock-tailed Tyrants; Blue-tufted Starthroat; Purple-crowned Plovercrest; Russet-winged Spadebill; Greater Rhea; Red-legged Seriema; Black-capped Donacobius; Southern Screamer; Jabiru; Plumbeous & Buff-necked Ibises; Many-colored Chaco Finch; Chaco Chachalaca; Cream-backed Woodpecker; Scimitar-billed & Great Rufous Woodcreepers; Chaco Earthcreeper; Crested Hornero; Cinereous Tyrant; Black-capped Warbling Finch; Nanday, Maroon-bellied & Blue-crowned Parakeets; Scarlet-headed Blackbird; Bearded Tachuri; Crested Doradito; Yellow-rumped Marshbird; White-headed Marsh Tyrant; Rusty-collared, Double-collared, White-bellied, Tawny-bellied, Marsh & Dark-throated Seedeaters; Black-masked Finch; Green-headed Tanager.
Lowland Tapir; Southern Three-banded Armadillo; Puma (rare); Capybara; Azara's Agouti; Dwarf Patagonian Cavy (Chacoan Mara).
Humid chaco; Atlantic Forest; wetlands; grassland
Very hot, alternating between the hot and humid chaco to humid Atlantic Forest

MODERATE TO CHALLENGING: This tour requires a good level of fitness, stamina, and overall health. It’s best suited for experienced birders who are comfortable with a more active itinerary. Please note that it may not be ideal for avid photographers, new birders, or those with mobility or health concerns.
This is a moderate to difficult tour. Most days start pre-dawn & end after dark. Several long travel days. You should have a good level of fitness & be in good health. Not suitable for dedicated or avid photographers; inexperienced birders; or anyone with mobility or health challenges. • Our Bird Photo Tours are a hybrid between our Classic birding tours and dedicated photographic tours. You don’t have to be a professional photographer or have the biggest lens; this is for everyone with an interest in photography and birding. Whether you’re using a bridge camera or the latest body and prime lens, our aims are the same. • These tours are not aimed at seeing the most species possible on the route, rather taking time to photograph key targets and any other interesting species we may find. Naturally, the overall species list will be lower than a comparable birding focused tour. • Whilst we may use blinds, feeders and hide setups on some of these tours, we will not be spending an entire day nor even several hours fixed in one spot. • These tours are suitable for photographers who prefer opportunistic photography over entire days in a hide. • Our leaders will assist in helping everyone secure good photographic opportunities and advise as much as they can on camera setup. However, they are not professional photographic tour leaders.
Comfortable in the large towns, a little more basic in remoter areas. Hot water is not always provided given the very hot environment.
Moderate to easy. Some headline species are low density.
Good to good+, can be very bright in open habitats. No hides or regular feeders, many species reasonably approachable, good lighting opportunities.
Great trip
This was my third trip with Dušan and he, once again, orchestrated an outstanding experience. Not only is he a top notch bird guide, but he is also a superb tour leader who works tirelessly to make sure his clients have an enjoyable and trouble-free experience. Last, but not least, he is an interesting and friendly person: always willing to share his expertise and excited about learning from others. I truly hope that I have an opportunity to bird and travel with Dušan again.
What a great experience! Everything was as you told us in the pre-departure literature, so we were well-prepared. Rob was an excellent tour leader. His vast experience in conservation, core knowledge of birds and bird behavior, and his enthusiasm was generously shared with the group. He modeled proper trail behavior and made sure that everyone “saw the bird”. The local guides were top-notch and took good care of the group. I also learned so much from the better birders in the group. Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed having Lev as a tour guide, he was very knowledgeable and helpful and great at giving directions to see "hidden" birds in the jungle.
This was a great tour and exceeded all my very high expectations. Having both Glen and Dušan as leaders was like having two olympians on your high school basketball team. As usual, the vehicles were too small for me, but Glen kindly allowed me to ride in the seat with the most legroom when possible. I have subsequently found out that I am definitely an outlier as far as client size is concerned. The tour was well planned, the schedule and guides flexible enough to work around complications, and the logistics aside from a glitch picking us up at the airport well executed.
