Portugal offers a fantastic diversity of habitats and bird species within a relatively small area. Within just a half-hour’s drive from Lisbon city centre and its international airport, we’ll find the Tagus Estuary and the Sado Estuary Natural Reserves. These two remarkable protected wetland areas boast extensive bird lists that include the likes of  Little Bustard, Bluethroat, Dartford, Savi’s and Melodious Warblers, Iberian Chiffchaff, Iberian Grey and Woodchat Shrikes, Greater Flamingo, White Stork, Eurasian Spoonbill, Glossy Ibis, Squacco and Purple Herons, Booted Eagle, Black-winged Kite, Collared Pratincole, Pallid Swift, Spotless Starling, Rock Sparrow, European Serin, Cirl Bunting, and an excellent selection of ducks, waders, gulls, and terns.

An hour south, we'll reach Alentejo and visit both the rolling plains of Castro Verde (home to Great Bustard and, Red Kite), and the bluffs and hills of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, noted for species such as Black Stork, Spanish Imperial Eagle and Iberian Green Woodpecker.

After departing Alentejo, we’ll drive another 45-minute south to the Algarve, a region rich in protected wetlands, situated along a major migratory flyway from Africa and especially notable for waders and passerines. Some of the sites we will visit, such as the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the Castro Marim Natural Reserve, are unique in Portugal for hosting rare and highly localized species like Audouin’s and Slender-billed Gulls and Mediterranean Short-toed Lark. These sites also offer excellent opportunities for close views of scarce species such as Little Bittern and Western Swamphen, Red-necked Nightjar, Sardinian and Spectacled Warblers, and Iberian Magpie, which are particularly abundant here. The cliffs and shores at Cape St. Vincent should also provide an excellent opportunity to observe a wide range of seabird species.

All this birding activity is complemented by visits to some of Portugal’s most interesting historical and cultural sites in Évora, Mértola, Sagres, and Lisbon. In fact, the country’s rich cultural heritage is on display throughout our entire route. At various times, we’ll be joined by qualified historians who will guide us through the historic districts of Évora, Mértola, and Lisbon, where we’ll wander along winding streets and through historic plazas and squares en route to castles, cathedrals, museums, Roman ruins, and scenic promenades. We’ll also have numerous opportunities to sample Portugal’s many culinary delights and excellent wines.

What our clients say about us

Dušan Brinkhuizen
CC, Puerto Rico - Forgotten Greater Antilles 2026

We saw all 19 endemics as well as all of those where splits may be likely in the future. Dušan is a tireless guide. Never gives up for the best view. Our local guide, Alcides, has astonishing eyes and ears and knows every inch of his island! Cannot imagine a better local guide. Also, wish to put in a good word for our driver to and from the airport, Carlos. Please keep Carlos on board. Great trip. My shortest birding trip and, I learned, too short for me—could have stayed longer.

André Bernon
CM, Thailand - Southern Extension II 2025

While the birding was more difficult, the guides knowledge on where to search for some of the key species. Helped the group find a number of very interesting species of birds.

Dušan Brinkhuizen
LG, Dominican Republic - Endemics of Hispaniola I 2026

Excellent tour. Accommodations were as good as could be expected given the isolated areas we needed to reach to see all the endemics. We saw them all. Dusan and the two local guides were exceptional at finding the birds and getting us on them. The vehicle fit our purpose, the luggage trailer was a great idea, and our driver Jose was very professional.

Glen Valentine
PB, India - Northern: Birds & Tigers (Small Group) 2026

Great to have such an enthousiastic and patient leader in Glen Valentine.

André Bernon
DE, Thailand - Asian Birding at its Best II 2025

Note that some of the comments I made regarding the Thailand extension apply to the main Thailand tour. I liked the sequence of sites visited; it ensured the Spoonbill Sandpiper was seen early on and then designed to minimize travel. Staying multiple nights at one site is always appreciated and seemed to be done as much as possible. The guides made special efforts to see bird species sought by the group; we saw more bird species than I expected. The drivers were excellent and also one of them, Jaime, was a good birder who helped the guides track down some species; it was an asset to have internet while in the vehicles. The drivers also produced an excellent video of the trip - a nice touch; they also did an excellent job with mid-morning breaks. I especially enjoyed visiting a hide all morning early on in the trip - it gave us a chance to see some elusive species but also several species very well. One morning was spent looking for a rare duck; I would have rather spent the time looking for a variety of Thai species. Quite a bit of birding was done along roads - it might have been better to bird trails etc. if they are available and afford good views of birds pointed out. Food was excellent (Uthai selected great dishes for the group) and accomodations were good. It was an enjoyable trip with rewarding looks at many of the bird species seen.
