The seldom-visited islands of São Tomé and Príncipe are tucked away in the Gulf of Guinea, some 180 miles (300 km) off the West African coastline. Rising steeply from the ocean and cloaked in lush tropical forest, these dramatic volcanic islands harbor one of Africa’s most remarkable concentrations of endemic birds.
Our São Tomé tour explores the rich forests and highlands of the main island as we search for its remarkable endemic birdlife. Top targets include some true heart-stoppers such as São Tomé Ibis, Giant Sunbird, Giant Weaver, the enigmatic São Tomé Fiscal, São Tomé Grosbeak, the bizarre São Tomé Shorttail, and two species of strange and highly localized speirops. These are just a few of the incredible highlights we look forward to sharing with you in this most exciting and often overlooked corner of Africa.
This tour only operates as an extension to our scheduled tours. Please contact our tailormade tours department to further information and costs as a standalone option.

DIFFICULT: This is a high-intensity “mega” tour designed for passionate listers and serious birders who enjoy a fast-paced schedule. Due to its demanding nature, it’s not recommended for avid photographers, inexperienced birders, or anyone with mobility or health limitations.
Moderate to mildly demanding. Not suitable for novice birders, dedicated photographers, or guests with mobility challenges.
Variable. Most nights are in comfortable hotels, 2 nights of basic camping on Monte Carmo (São Tomé).
Moderate to difficult. Primarily forest birding with several very low-density species.
Worthwhile. No dedicated hides.
The islands are so unique and very, very beautiful. They can also be very, very wet AND muddy. I make the following comments for future participants. For the night camping, I was very glad that I had brought flannel pajamas and a polar fleece sleeping sack that were protected in a waterproof bag, and I was quite comfortable for the night. However, my waterproofed boots were thoroughly soaked inside from the rain coming in from my waterlogged trousers and socks. I think rain trousers and ankle-tight rubber boots would have worked. Otherwise, we had a great time. The birds were fantastic, as were the guides. Dan is super. He is great with the birds and the participants. He even gave away his one pair of dry trousers to a participant that had shredded his trousers on the hike up Monte Carmo. I highly recommend this tour to the more hardy birders given that the hikes are quite slippery and muddy. Also, I appreciate the Rockjumper guides keeping eBird lists to share with the group. I know that task can take some real extra effort.
