The small West African nation of Senegal is a popular birding holiday destination, for many reasons. One of these is the ability to escape the cold Northern winters to a summer wonderland only a few hour’s flight away, though add in easily accessible, and superb West African birding habitats and many sought after birds and it’s easy to understand why so many birders flock to this nation on an annual basis.

Rockjumper is, therefore, pleased to be offering a superb tour to this great birding destination, and our very comprehensive tour encompasses the avian highlights of this remarkable region, targeting an array of very special and sought-after species. For anyone seeking a relaxed and enjoyable introduction to African birds and birding and excellent photographic opportunities, this tour comes highly recommended!.

Tour Pace & Walking

MODERATE TO CHALLENGING: This tour requires a good level of fitness, stamina, and overall health. It’s best suited for experienced birders who are comfortable with a more active itinerary. Please note that it may not be ideal for avid photographers, new birders, or those with mobility or health concerns.

Tour pace is moderate with several long travel days. Not suitable for anyone with mobility or health challenges. Our Mega tours are very fast-paced birding adventures designed for the dedicated lister and serious birder. The focus of the tour is to see as many of the endemics and area specials as possible in our given time. In order to cover the necessary route to maximise the species list we tend to spend a single night at most sites and travel large distances. There is very little down time aside from that spent driving from one site to the next. These tours are not suitable for dedicated or avid photographers; inexperienced or new birders; as well as anyone with serious mobility or health challenges.

Accommodation

Simple & comfortable on some nights, otherwise good. All en suite.

Ease of Birding

Several difficult target species, some species are low density/or difficult.

Other Attractions

Scissor-tailed Kite colony, Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, an internationally important wetland

Photographic Opportunities

Worthwhile to good. No dedicated hides. Limited forest.

What our clients say about us

Robert Williams
EW, Guyana - Birds & Wildlife (Relaxed) 2026

What a great experience! Everything was as you told us in the pre-departure literature, so we were well-prepared. Rob was an excellent tour leader. His vast experience in conservation, core knowledge of birds and bird behavior, and his enthusiasm was generously shared with the group. He modeled proper trail behavior and made sure that everyone “saw the bird”. The local guides were top-notch and took good care of the group. I also learned so much from the better birders in the group. Highly recommended!

Quinton Paul Josop
SA, Sri Lanka - Endemic Birds & Big Game (Small Group) 2026

Paul brought in his wealth of experience. He worked well with Ashoka to make sure nothing was lost in translation. One member sustained an injury on day 1, probably because he declined the extra help offered on a slightly slippery walk. Paul and Ashoka took charge of the situation immediately, made sure the rest of the group was comfortable while getting help. It was incredible that the injured person managed to complete the trip with a walker. Ashoka is a highly experienced local guide. He went out of the way to accommodate our birding and non-birding (request to try local food) requests. Both Paul and Ashoka were always calm and very pleasant, paying individual attention to every person and ensured we had a memorable experience.

I had a wonderful time. Thanks!

CG, Ethiopia - Lalibela Extension 2026

Our local guide was very nice; however his English language skills could be improved. The accommodation was very nice. I have told many people about Rockjumper. I value the time and effort spent in ensuring our trips are memorable. I can’t sing the praises of the office staff enough. Thanks so much. I’m already looking for my next trip with you. Katy

Stephan Lorenz
SW, China - Southeast in Winter 2026

I was extremely pleased with this tour. The local guide, Jason, was very helpful and Stephan was extremely knowledgeable and excellent at finding all the targets that we were looking for. I would travel anywhere at any time with him again.
