South Africa has been famous for its wide variety and superior quality of wines since the 17th century. Today dozens of vintage estates not only produce award-winning wines but also offer fine cuisine in tranquil settings and excellent birding opportunities. This special tour will visit a selection of carefully chosen Cape wine estates, including multi-award winning Hartenberg and Constantia Glen – idyllically set in South Africa’s oldest wine region, the Constantia Valley. We will have ample opportunity to sample South Africa’s unique grape varietal – Pinotage, while also enjoying some of the regions finest Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz. Besides grand wine estates we also visit the diverse ecosystem of the West Coast National Park, the spectacular Cape Peninsula and interior dry country riches of the Tanqua Karoo where many of the Cape’s fine endemic birds can be located.
The second leg of the tour finds us in the wilds of Zululand on South Africa’s eastern seaboard. Here we have exclusive use of a luxurious lodge deep within the wilderness of a prime Big Five private game reserve. Not only will we enjoy comfortable game drives through some of the country’s finest birding and mammal habitat, but our wine adventure will continue as we sample and learn about an ever-surprising selection of fine South African wines. Besides the unforgettable Big Five, we also have opportunities to enjoy such species as African Wild Dog, Cheetah, Hippopotamus, and numerous other species of mammals while the reserve boasts a list of over 400 bird species including many highly sought-after specialties. From the endemic rich Fynbos Kingdom of the Western Cape to the teeming wildlife of Zululand, this tour offers the very best of Southern African birding, game viewing and wine!

Good to very good. Some hides, mostly for mammal photography.
As an experienced world traveller and birder, I must say that the Eastern South Africa and Cape Extension III tours went beyond my already high expectations. All in all, we saw nearly 540 bird species, plus many mammals, including the "Big Five". Our guide, Andre Bernon, really made an effort for us all to see each and every species, and was also very knowledgeable about reptiles, mammals, South African history etc. An excellent guide!
The tour was expertly led by David Hoddinott, who was attentive to the clients and exceptionally knowledgeable. He ensured everyone had seen each species of bird encountered. The weather took a turn, but David was keen to stick out as long as it was safe to give us the best chance of maximising our species. Highly recommended.
We were very happy to have Heinz Ortmann as our guide. He operated the tour very skilfully in every way and with flexibility when needed to try to get all possible targets. We were also very positively surprised that he had such a great knowledge about mammals, butterflies, reptiles and amphibians beside the birds. Since we also are very interested in all these groups, this was a most welcome bonus. A great tour that we will remember for a long time. We would be very happy doing another private trip with Heinz as our guide.
Paul was kind, helpful, fun personality and excellent at finding and pointing out the target birds.
Amazing job on the Kruger Challenger, your team was amazing in handling all of the details, and “challenges”. Jan did a great job on the Cape Town tour.
