Overview

This comprehensive tour covers the most exciting regions of the Cape in our quest to experience both breathtaking displays of wildflowers and to track down some of the countrys endemic birds. We cover the vibrant city of Cape Town, where Table Mountain provides a spectacular backdrop to the immensely diverse fynbos that cloaks the cities periphery. This fynbos constitutes the Cape Floral Kingdom – the smallest and richest of the world’s 6 floral kingdoms. It is also the only floral kingdom to be confined to the boundaries of a single country. We venture to the West Coast and Namaqualand, which boast an outrageous and world famous floral display in years of good rains, whilst also traversing the heart of the country’s semi-desert region, focusing on the special bird’s endemic to this ancient landscape. We also depart pur wildflower country by heading to Augrabies Falls, an area offering unparalleled raptor viewing and a wide range of dry region birds. We invite you on this celebration of some of the finest wildflower and endemic birding that the African continent has to offer!

Markus gets A+++ marks from me. Not only is he an excellent birder, but he is also a wonderful traveling companion. Our conversations were varied and interesting. He not only knows a lot about nature; he also participated in talks about a wide variety of subjects. We learned a lot about South Africa. His sense of humor is wonderful. His enthusiasm kept us all on an anticipatory high. His leading a tour will be a big plus for me when I am deciding on another trip.

"It was a fantastic tour, far exceeding my expectations. The vehicle was great and the small group size was a bonus. Doug was a fantastic tour guide and went above and beyond to get as many bird species as possible. His knowledge of the birds and animals was exceptional. Thank you for a fantastic tour and please pass on to the powers that be on just how good Doug was as a guide. Would definitely use Rockjumper again!"

Just a quick report that we have returned home safely following a great trip to southern Africa. Everything came off as planned and the experiences were everything that we had hoped for. We really enjoyed the bush camps since they provide a remote experience with lots of animals and few other tourists. The selection of camps provided an excellent balance of habitats and wildlife viewing. Additionally, we would like to thank Athol for his excellent leadership during the Eastern South Africa tour. He is a true gentleman and excellent guide and birder.... All around we were very pleased with the trip. And, thank you and the other staff at Rockjumper for helping to put the trip together.

Doug McCulloch will be an excellent guide. His skill in locating the birds was very good, and his diligence served us well in identifying over four hundred species. His attention to the individual needs of the group was greatly appreciated, as well as his patience with this novice traveler.

I had an excellent birding adventure. Daniel Danckwerts was superb at finding and identifying the myriad of species. He interfaces with the group exceptionally well, from the beginner birder to the pros on the tour. I would love to go on another birding tour with Dan, as he was exceptionally skilled at his craft. Other environmental/birding issues would pop up for conversation and he was skilled in his answers and knowledge. His passion for birding was very apparent, as well as his thoughtfulness in making sure everyone was on the bird and helping with our travel experience.
