Our extension to New Caledonia visits this seriously ancient chip off the once enormous Gondwanaland block. New Caledonia hosts, in addition to Kagu, one of the most extraordinary aggregations of endemic plants and birds, as well as several endemic mammals and reptiles. During our time on the mainland, or “Grande Terre”, we will seek out such specialities as White-bellied Goshawk, Goliath Imperial Pigeon (the world’s largest arboreal pigeon), the lovely Cloven-feathered Dove, New Caledonian and the rare Horned Parakeets, the endangered and most peculiar Crow Honeyeater, New Caledonian Myzomela, Barred Honeyeater, New Caledonian Friarbird, Yellow-bellied Flyrobin, New Caledonian Whistler, New Caledonian Cuckooshrike, New Caledonian Thicketbird, Striated Starling, Green-backed White-eye, and the superb Red-throated Parrotfinch.
Kagu; New Caledonian Goshawk; Goliath Pigeon; Cloven-feathered Dove; Crested & Red-crowned Parakeets; New Caledonian & Melanesian Cuckooshrikes; Long-tailed Triller; New Caledonian Gerygone; New Caledonian Whistler; New Caledonian Starling; New Caledonian Myzomela; Dark-brown, Barred & Crow Honeyeaters; New Caledonian Friarbird; New Caledonian Crow; Red-throated Parrotfinch; New Caledonian Thicketbird.

MODERATE TO CHALLENGING: This tour requires a good level of fitness, stamina, and overall health. It’s best suited for experienced birders who are comfortable with a more active itinerary. Please note that it may not be ideal for avid photographers, new birders, or those with mobility or health concerns.
Moderate to brisk paced tours suited for those in good health with good level of fitness. Not suited for anyone with mobility challenges or serious medical conditions. Opportunities for afternoon snorkeling on several days.
Reasonable to very comfortable standard.
Moderate to demanding. Several difficult target species.
little-explored islands, fantastic scenery, fascinating collage of landscapes & culture
Worthwhile to good, tricky in the forests.
What a great experience! Everything was as you told us in the pre-departure literature, so we were well-prepared. Rob was an excellent tour leader. His vast experience in conservation, core knowledge of birds and bird behavior, and his enthusiasm was generously shared with the group. He modeled proper trail behavior and made sure that everyone “saw the bird”. The local guides were top-notch and took good care of the group. I also learned so much from the better birders in the group. Highly recommended!
Overall great job at every aspect of the trip.
Excellent tour. Accommodations were as good as could be expected given the isolated areas we needed to reach to see all the endemics. We saw them all. Dusan and the two local guides were exceptional at finding the birds and getting us on them. The vehicle fit our purpose, the luggage trailer was a great idea, and our driver Jose was very professional.
Paul brought in his wealth of experience. He worked well with Ashoka to make sure nothing was lost in translation. One member sustained an injury on day 1, probably because he declined the extra help offered on a slightly slippery walk. Paul and Ashoka took charge of the situation immediately, made sure the rest of the group was comfortable while getting help. It was incredible that the injured person managed to complete the trip with a walker. Ashoka is a highly experienced local guide. He went out of the way to accommodate our birding and non-birding (request to try local food) requests. Both Paul and Ashoka were always calm and very pleasant, paying individual attention to every person and ensured we had a memorable experience.
Our trip to Madagascar was wonderful! Rockjumper did a great job with tour logistics, lodging, etc. Best of all was our guide! Lev Frid is an amazing birding/nature guide. He is incredibly good at not only hearing, identifying and finding the birds, but Lev is also able to quickly (and patiently) help all the tour participants get on the birds. In addition, he is just a really fun guy to be with. His sense of humor kept us laughing and his wealth of birding stories kept everyone interested and engaged during the trip. It was amazing to see the wildlife of Madagascar and having Lev as a guide made our experience that much better.
