Southern Spain hosts one of the greatest bird migration spectacles on the planet. At the narrow Strait of Gibraltar, only 14 kilometres (9 miles) separate Europe from Africa, creating a natural bottleneck through which millions of birds pass each year. During late September, the migration season is often at its peak, with vast numbers of raptors, storks, seabirds and passerines moving south towards their African wintering grounds. Few places in the world offer such opportunities to witness migration on this scale.

Our journey focuses on the diverse landscapes of Andalusia, from the internationally important wetlands of the Guadalquivir Valley and Doñana region to the dramatic cliffs and coastal habitats surrounding Tarifa, Europe's southernmost point. Along the way we will explore some of Spain's most productive birding areas in search of a remarkable array of species, including Spanish Imperial Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, Black-winged Kite, White-headed Duck, Marbled Duck, Northern Bald Ibis, Little Swift and Greater Flamingo.

The waters of the Strait are equally rewarding, supporting an impressive variety of seabirds and marine mammals. Sea watching may produce Mediterranean (Balearic) and Scopoli's Shearwaters, Northern Gannet and skuas, while our whale-watching excursion offers opportunities to encounter several species of dolphins and whales in one of Europe's richest marine environments.

Migration remains the central theme throughout the tour. Weather permitting, we may witness breathtaking concentrations of soaring birds gathering above the hills overlooking the Strait before embarking on the crossing to Africa. Thousands of Black Kites, Short-toed Snake Eagles, Booted Eagles, storks and other migrants can fill the skies, creating one of the most memorable wildlife experiences Europe has to offer.

Combining spectacular migration, outstanding wetlands, dramatic mountain scenery and a wealth of Mediterranean specialities, this tour offers an unforgettable exploration of one of Europe's premier birding destinations.

What our clients say about us

Javi Elorriaga
CQ, Spain - Birds, Wine & Iberian Lynx (Small Group) 2025

Enjoyed having the extra cultural experiences of a flamenco show and seeing the Don Quixote windmills. Fabulous Lynx viewing at Cato Clavo where we were able to get super photos. Javi was a very good driver and guide and explained a lot about conservation.

Robert Williams
CK, Spain 2018

I enjoyed the tour and was especially pleased with our tour leader, Rob Williams, and both local guides, who were excellent and very adept at finding our target birds as well as managing all the logistics required by a trip of this nature. This was my first Rockjumper birding tour and the tour exceeded my expectations.

Yeray Seminario
AL, Spain 2024

Stephan and Yeray were tremendous guides and trip leaders. They were excellent in finding the birds and mammals and helping the whole group get eyes on them. Their knowledge about mammals, the local environment, etc was excellent as well. They were able to handle the few curveballs that came up and always communicated plans clearly. They were always pleasant and great at keeping the group relaxed and in good spirits. The tour logistics were excellent with good consideration for location, travel, birding time, etc. All of the accommodations were good to excellent - no issues at all. Thanks for an excellent bird tour!

Robert Williams
AH, Spain 2018

Rob Williams was a fantastic guide -- "Everything's under control!" He is absolutely superb at bird identification. Rob has a great sense of humor, and a wonderful relationship with the innkeepers and vendors along our way. Yeray Seminario, our guide on the Gibraltar Extension, is a treasure! He is soft-spoken, easy-going, approachable, and incredibly knowledgeable about birds. I was delighted to learn that he is an eBird moderator for Spain. He directed us to several great restaurants in the Tarifa area. Alberto Bueno is a sweetheart! He is so classically Spanish and so passionate about the birds. Except for myself (!), I think he was the most enthusiastic about EVERY bird we saw. He is a delightful guide -- compassionate, generous and fun. He and Rob made an unbeatable team and got along seamlessly. We saw well over 250 species of birds, enjoyed fantastic scenery, food and wine! It was a very good trip, and my thanks go to Rob, Yeray and Alberto for all their hard work.

Robert Williams
SC, Spain 2022

Both guides were excellent and also good drivers. They make a very good team together. They complemented each other well. Their knowledge of birds and lynx are incredible. They share their passions easily. They both made ebird lists which was greatly appreciated. Rob Williams has also a great sense of humor which made the trip even more fun. Yeray Seminario is very attentive to our needs and very good at managing the logistics. He was always keen to share information about Spain, birds, animals and answered all the questions that we asked. The wine and food were excellent as were the accommodations. Overall we had a great trip.
