Southern Spain hosts one of the greatest bird migration spectacles on the planet. At the narrow Strait of Gibraltar, only 14 kilometres (9 miles) separate Europe from Africa, creating a natural bottleneck through which millions of birds pass each year. During late September, the migration season is often at its peak, with vast numbers of raptors, storks, seabirds and passerines moving south towards their African wintering grounds. Few places in the world offer such opportunities to witness migration on this scale.

Our journey focuses on the diverse landscapes of Andalusia, from the internationally important wetlands of the Guadalquivir Valley and Doñana region to the dramatic cliffs and coastal habitats surrounding Tarifa, Europe's southernmost point. Along the way we will explore some of Spain's most productive birding areas in search of a remarkable array of species, including Spanish Imperial Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, Black-winged Kite, White-headed Duck, Marbled Duck, Northern Bald Ibis, Little Swift and Greater Flamingo.

The waters of the Strait are equally rewarding, supporting an impressive variety of seabirds and marine mammals. Sea watching may produce Mediterranean (Balearic) and Scopoli's Shearwaters, Northern Gannet and skuas, while our whale-watching excursion offers opportunities to encounter several species of dolphins and whales in one of Europe's richest marine environments.

Migration remains the central theme throughout the tour. Weather permitting, we may witness breathtaking concentrations of soaring birds gathering above the hills overlooking the Strait before embarking on the crossing to Africa. Thousands of Black Kites, Short-toed Snake Eagles, Booted Eagles, storks and other migrants can fill the skies, creating one of the most memorable wildlife experiences Europe has to offer.

Combining spectacular migration, outstanding wetlands, dramatic mountain scenery and a wealth of Mediterranean specialities, this tour offers an unforgettable exploration of one of Europe's premier birding destinations.

What our clients say about us

Javi Elorriaga
TM, Spain - Best of Birding (Small Group) I 2026

Javi is one of the BEST bird guides there is! He’s very professional, organized, treats everyone with respect, and persists in finding those hard-to-find birds - sometimes successfully and sometimes not. He continuously checks recent eBird reports and checks in with colleagues to see if there are any updates to help in finding specific species. He doesn’t give up!! Not easily anyway. He gives us the day’s plan the evening before and then again at breakfast each day, and tells us which birds we’ll be looking for in different habitats. If the opportunity arises, I wouldn’t hesitate to do a tour with javi again. Javi also pays close attention to how each participant is doing and provides frequent “comfort” stops, etc, etc. He’s also good at informing us the length of drive between stops. AND he’s a careful and good driver. We give javi an A+.

Stephan Lorenz

Yeray Seminario
LJ, Spain - Best of Birding (Small Group) II 2026

We had an overall great trip to Spain, which is a very beautiful country with gorgeous landscapes and a lot of wild nature. We were unfortunate with the weather which was much colder than average at this time of the year, and with quite a bit of rain, snow and hail along the way, especially in the Pyrenees mountains. Yeray was an excellent guide, who was very friendly and helpful in all aspects of the trip. He especially worked hard and creatively to adapt the schedule to the ever changing weather. We saw pretty much all of the expected targets, with only a small number of misses.

Dušan Brinkhuizen
SJ - Spain 2022

Wonderful tour. The guides – Dusan and Yeray – were both fantastic; their bird expertise, patience and senses of humour very much appreciated. The local guides were top notch as well. The accommodation and food were excellent. The scenery, spring wildflowers, stone villages, etc. all made the trip extraordinary.

Robert Williams
FO, Spain 2018

Everything was very good. We certainly tried for everything. Great that we had the time to look at reptiles, frogs, etc. I certainly got almost all my major targets.
