This tour pairs with: Tobago Extension - Relaxed Tropical Island Birding - Houston Audubon Society 2026
The tropical islands of Trinidad and Tobago, lying just off the coast of north-eastern Venezuela, offer one of the richest and most accessible birding experiences in the entire Caribbean. Their unique position at the gateway to South America, coupled with a remarkable diversity of habitats—from coastal wetlands and lowland forests to lush mountains—creates an exceptional setting for both resident and migratory birds.
This specially designed tour for the Houston Audubon Society showcases the very best of Trinidad, with excellent accommodations set within prime birding habitat. Participants will enjoy unforgettable encounters with iconic species such as the commanding Bearded Bellbird, dazzling Scarlet Ibis, striking Trinidad Motmot, glittering Tufted Coquette, and the critically endangered Trinidad Piping Guan.
For those wishing to extend their adventure, a dedicated Tobago extension has been arranged. This offers the chance to experience the island’s own unique charm and birdlife, completing the picture of why this twin-island nation is regarded as one of the world’s great tropical birding destinations. Photographers, too, will be spoiled for choice: not only are macaws, toucans, tanagers, motmots, and hummingbirds abundant, but the scenery itself provides a spectacular backdrop to every outing.

MODERATE TO CHALLENGING: This tour requires a good level of fitness, stamina, and overall health. It’s best suited for experienced birders who are comfortable with a more active itinerary. Please note that it may not be ideal for avid photographers, new birders, or those with mobility or health concerns.
An easy, enjoyable birding vacation. our Relaxed series of tours are designed to focus on having an enjoyable holiday with a bird and wildlife focus. Where possible; we have reduced or removed long drives, single night stays and poor/rustic accommodation. We have also sought to reduce or remove difficult hikes, narrow/muddy trails and otherwise oppressive environmental conditions. Early starts and night birding are mostly optional, and we will not spend much time searching for difficult and/or skulking species. These tours are not suitable for hardcore birders and listers, or dedicated photographers.
Comfortable to very comfortable.
Undemanding. A few elusive species that may require some extra time/effort.
Spectacled Caiman
Good to very good. Dedicated feeders at multiple sites
An excellent trip. Good list of birds even though it was the relaxed itinerary. Rob’s recounting some of his excellent adventures was an added bonus.
Our trip to Madagascar was wonderful! Rockjumper did a great job with tour logistics, lodging, etc. Best of all was our guide! Lev Frid is an amazing birding/nature guide. He is incredibly good at not only hearing, identifying and finding the birds, but Lev is also able to quickly (and patiently) help all the tour participants get on the birds. In addition, he is just a really fun guy to be with. His sense of humor kept us laughing and his wealth of birding stories kept everyone interested and engaged during the trip. It was amazing to see the wildlife of Madagascar and having Lev as a guide made our experience that much better.
Despite the heat and humidity, Guyana is a magical place with gorgeous rainforests and savannahs and lots of beautiful birds and the wonderful giant anteater. Lev Frid was a wonderful guide full of great enthusiasm. I especially appreciated his patience in helping everyone get a good view of the birds. He is a joy to travel with. Our local guide was also great and a lot of fun to be around and so helpful as well in identifying the different birds. Also a special shout out to Leroy, who helped us on the last full day of birding; he was great. The drivers Renford and Devon were awesome as well.
Paul brought in his wealth of experience. He worked well with Ashoka to make sure nothing was lost in translation. One member sustained an injury on day 1, probably because he declined the extra help offered on a slightly slippery walk. Paul and Ashoka took charge of the situation immediately, made sure the rest of the group was comfortable while getting help. It was incredible that the injured person managed to complete the trip with a walker. Ashoka is a highly experienced local guide. He went out of the way to accommodate our birding and non-birding (request to try local food) requests. Both Paul and Ashoka were always calm and very pleasant, paying individual attention to every person and ensured we had a memorable experience.
This was a great tour and exceeded all my very high expectations. Having both Glen and Dušan as leaders was like having two olympians on your high school basketball team. As usual, the vehicles were too small for me, but Glen kindly allowed me to ride in the seat with the most legroom when possible. I have subsequently found out that I am definitely an outlier as far as client size is concerned. The tour was well planned, the schedule and guides flexible enough to work around complications, and the logistics aside from a glitch picking us up at the airport well executed.
