Pristine wilderness areas, spectacular landscapes and an amazing variety of ecosystems make Zimbabwe a natural history paradise. Our Best of Birding Zimbabwe tour incorporates a variety of rich habitats and we can expect some unrivalled birding and wildlife experiences. Tour targets include such specials as Streaky-breasted Flufftail, Striped Crake, the localized Boulder Chat, Chirinda Apalis, Robert’s Prinia, the stunning Swynnerton’s Robin, Spotted Creeper, Red-throated Twinspot, Red-faced Crimsonwing, Racket-tailed Roller and Southern Hyliota. Birding sites include Gonarezhou National Park, the fantastic Savé Valley Conservancy and the Miombo woodlands and forests of the Vumba Mountains. Furthermore, we will take time to marvel at the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, as well as visiting several magnificent panels of San (Bushman) rock art. Big game abounds and we have the special opportunity to track both Black and White Rhinoceros on foot and enjoy packs of African Wild Dog; while exciting night drives offer us chances for numerous nocturnal species including Leopard, Brown Hyena, Aardvark and even Ground Pangolin!
Our Victoria Falls Extension takes to these world famous falls, rightly considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. We will also enjoy quality birding at the exclusive Imbabala Lodge on the Zambezi floodplain. Avian targets on this brief yet thoroughly recommended adventure include Slaty Egret, Rufous-bellied Heron, the huge Coppery-tailed Coucal, Rock Pratincole, Schalow’s Turaco, Bradfield’s Hornbill and the rare Shelley’s Sunbird.
Our short extension to the Eastern Highlands takes in the best of Zimbabwe’s montane species including the near endemic Chirinda Apalis, Roberts’s Warbler, the delightful Swynnerton’s Robin, Bronzy Sunbird, Black-fronted Bushshrike, African Spotted Creeper, Red-faced Crombec, White-breasted Cuckooshrike, Green-capped Eremomela and Cinnamon-breasted Tit.
