Ethiopia is hands-down one of Africa’s most productive and rewarding birding destinations. A plethora of endemic birds, many of which are very tame and confiding is further complimented by a rich assemblage of forest and savannah species, rare mammals and a kaleidoscope of culture and food that combine to produce a fascinating and intriguing experience.
Spring brings earth parching rain, flushing the spectacular landscapes in green. Spring means the Palearctic migrants have already returned home, but the important endemic and near endemic species are just beginning their breeding cycle. Outside of the regular tourist season, you’ll feel that Ethiopia is all yours! Fascinating history, decent road infrastructure, diverse cultures and astonishing wildlife make Ethiopia an essential expedition for both hard-core and casual birders alike, and for many of our guides this remains one of their top destinations on the African continent!

MODERATE TO CHALLENGING: This tour requires a good level of fitness, stamina, and overall health. It’s best suited for experienced birders who are comfortable with a more active itinerary. Please note that it may not be ideal for avid photographers, new birders, or those with mobility or health concerns.
Birding is undemanding but long travel days, low food diversity & some basic accommodations are taxing.
Very variable. Modern & comfortable in the Rift Valley to basic/rustic in the south. Average elsewhere.
One of the most enjoyable & prolific birding destinations in Africa. Many species are approachable & provide good visuals in open conditions.

spectacular montane scenery, interesting ancient farming methods
Good to excellent. No dedicated hides. Many species are approachable, habitat & lighting are often conducive.
Greg de Klerk did a very good job managing the tour, was personable and was highly effective at bird spotting & identification.
Julian was a wonderful leader, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and attentive to our needs. The local guide, was also excellent and worked particularly hard when we had to change accommodation at short notice. The cultural guide was very knowledgeable and shared both his knowledge and his experience of Orthodox Christianity with us in a very helpful manner. We saw a lot of birds and a good variety of mammals. In addition the food was very interesting and the coffee outstanding.
Enjoyed seeing the churches and learning about the history while also doing some birding.
Greg de Klerk was an excellent guide and his lively manner and humour did much to make the trip enjoyable.
Just a few comments on the recent Ethiopia Summer Highland Endemics tour guided by David Hodinott. First, I want to commend David on his skills as a leader and guide. His logistic and organizational skills are first-class and his knowledge of the bird life in Ethiopia matchless. His interpersonal skills with the group kept people on time, focused and successful in getting good looks at most species and great looks at many. That was his challenging task and he accomplished it with passion and patience, two qualities that are often difficult to combine.
