This comprehensive Kenya birding adventure is designed to showcase the country’s extraordinary ecological diversity, from highland grasslands and montane forests to arid savannas and coastal endemism hotspots. Over three weeks of birding, we expect to record an exceptional species list, alongside a remarkable array of mammals, dramatic scenery, and some of East Africa’s finest lodges and tented camps, all hosted by Kenya’s famously warm and welcoming people.

We begin in Nairobi before heading into the highlands of Kinangop and Soysambu Conservancy, where grassland and acacia habitats support a suite of localized species including Sharpe’s Longclaw, Aberdare Cisticola, and the striking Jackson’s Widowbird. From here we descend into the Rift Valley, exploring Lake Nakuru and continuing to the shores of Lake Victoria at Kisumu, where papyrus swamps and lakeside habitats offer specialties such as Papyrus Gonolek, Carruthers’s Cisticola, and the localized Papyrus Yellow Warbler.

Our journey then takes us into the famed Kakamega Forest, Kenya’s only true equatorial rainforest and a stronghold of Guinea-Congo biome species. Here we target an exciting collection of western forest specials including Blue-headed Bee-eater, Turner’s Eremomela, Chapin’s Flycatcher, Blue-shouldered Robin-Chat, and Yellow-bellied Wattle-eye.

Heading back into drier country, we explore Lake Baringo and the Kerio Valley, where the dramatic shift in habitat produces a completely new avifauna. Key targets include Jackson’s Hornbill, Northern Masked Weaver, Bristle-crowned Starling, Somali Sparrow, and Hemprich’s Hornbill. We then climb once more into the central highlands, birding the forests of the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya, where montane specials such as Jackson’s Francolin, Bar-tailed Trogon, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, and Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon await, alongside regional endemics like Hinde’s Babbler.

From here we venture north into the semi-arid Samburu and Shaba National Reserves, one of Kenya’s most distinctive birding regions. This area is famed for its charismatic dry-country species, and we will search for Golden-breasted Starling, Vulturine Guineafowl, Somali Bee-eater, Williams’s Lark, and Lichtenstein’s Sandgrouse.

After returning briefly to Nairobi, we head south into the vast landscapes of Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks, combining excellent big game viewing with a rich birdlife that includes dry-country specials and widespread savanna species. The nearby Taita Hills provide a sharp contrast, hosting some of Kenya’s most threatened and range-restricted birds, including the critically endangered Taita Thrush and Taita Apalis.

Our tour concludes along the Kenyan coast, beginning with the globally important Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and nearby coastal habitats. This is one of Africa’s most important centres of endemism, and we will search for a suite of highly sought-after species including Sokoke Scops Owl, Sokoke Pipit, Amani Sunbird and the scarce Kilifi Weaver. We then continue to Malindi before flying to the historic island of Lamu, where coastal birding takes on a different character. Here we will target one of East Africa’s most elusive and seldom-recorded species, the enigmatic Black Boubou - alongside a variety of coastal and island specialists. This unique finale, blending exceptional birding with rich Swahili culture, provides a memorable and fitting end to this truly diverse Kenyan adventure.

What our clients say about us

Gregory de Klerk
SK - Kenya 2024

Greg de Klerk was a wonderful leader. He knew exactly how to lead this relaxed tour. He always made sure that the needs of everyone in group were being met. He also demonstrated incredible knowledge of both the birds and the animals. I would go anywhere with him on another related tour.

Stephan Lorenz
LVY, Kenya - Mega Birding Tour 2025

This trip was a fantastic experience for me, both as a traveler and as an intermediate birder. Kenya is an extraordinary country to explore, and this itinerary certainly delivered a huge variety of habitats, birds, and landscapes. The days were long, packed, and sometimes demanding, but the rewards were genuinely worth it. One thing I appreciated throughout the tour was how clear it became that the logistics—especially the long hours in the jeep—were simply part of what was needed to make the birding goals possible. In my own line of work, planning and logistics are everything, so I fully understood what was happening behind the scenes. Whenever we had to eat in the vehicle, Stephan always explained honestly why: because there was no smarter alternative if we wanted to reach the planned areas and have the best shot at our targets. And he was right. As for the guiding, Stephan was excellent. He’s tireless in the field, extremely sharp, and incredibly knowledgeable—but what stood out most for me was how approachable he is. As an intermediate birder, I never once felt overlooked or rushed. He taught, explained, and helped me refine my skills without ever making me feel inadequate or behind the group. His patience, clarity, and genuine interest in helping each participant improve made a huge impact on my experience. He was also very receptive to feedback. Whenever we shared observations or suggestions, he didn’t just brush them off; he acknowledged them and showed real appreciation. That kind of attitude goes a long way on a long tour. Regarding the itinerary, while it was certainly comprehensive, I personally feel it might have flowed better in reverse. Starting with the more demanding, longer days and the less captivating sites—and ending with the “wow” locations—would have given the trip a stronger final note. Our last three days felt long and tiring, and they didn’t quite match the excitement of earlier highlights. A reordering could create a more compelling and energizing finish. I also believe that including the Masai Mara would take this tour from excellent to truly iconic. The Mara is one of East Africa’s crown jewels, both for birds and mammals, and we would have happily paid more or added extra days to include it. As part of a “mega” Kenya itinerary, it feels like a natural and very valuable addition. Accommodation-wise, most lodges were very good, some even excellent. A few were more basic but still fine. The main outlier was the Blue Post Hotel, where the rooms we received didn’t reflect what is advertised online. All in all, the experience was memorable, the birding phenomenal, and the group dynamic wonderful. I walked away with new skills, new species, and a renewed appreciation for what such a complex tour takes to run well. I’d happily travel with Rockjumper again—especially if Stephan is leading.

Glen Valentine
ID, Kenya 2021

Great trip – close encounters with a lot of target birds and mammals, exciting habitats, comfortable accommodations and an outstanding guide. Glen must be one of the foremost authorities on African birds and I learned a great deal from him regarding ecology, behaviour, systematics and conservation.

Gregory de Klerk
AW - Kenya 2024

This trip far exceeded my expectations. Our guide, Greg de Klerk, was excellent in every way. He took the time to actually teach us about bird and animal behavior. When other tour vehicles were speeding away, we got to sit and really learn. Also our driver, Martin, was superb -- an excellent driver who navigated the rutted roads with great skill, but also proved himself to be an excellent spotter and birder. Greg and Martin made a wonderful team. The selection of game reserves that we visited on this trip was perfect, especially for me as a first-timer. I felt I got an excellent overview of the Kenyan countryside. Our accommodations were all comfortable, but some were better than others. I loved the Wildebeest Eco-Lodge in Nairobi -- a wonderful introduction to the country. Castle Forest felt magical, and even the annoyance of having only one plug per room did not dampen my enthusiasm. The Sopa Lodge at Sambura was comfortable and the staff were very accommodating; I just wish the doors and windows had been a bit tighter to keep out a startling array of large critters (crickets, spiders, and something very large with lots of legs), none of which appeared at any other location. The Lodge at Lake Nakuru was a treat and very unexpected. But I loved the low-key atmosphere of the Pride Inn at Masai Mara -- a lovely location, and again the staff were wonderful. I thought the food offered at the buffets in all our lodges was excellent overall. Thank you for a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go back.

Stephan Lorenz
JCM, Kenya - Mega Birding Tour 2025

Tour Review – Kenya Mega Birding Tour Our experience on this tour was truly exceptional, and the main reason for that was our tour leader, Stephan Lorenz. Stephan is, without question, the best birding guide we have ever had. His guiding style is remarkable: relentless in the field, always pushing to find the birds no matter the conditions, while maintaining a calm, patient, and positive attitude throughout long days. He has an almost supernatural ability to detect birds and an extraordinary depth of knowledge. Beyond identification, he actively teaches participants to become better birders, sharing techniques, fieldcraft, and intuition in a way that is both inspiring and accessible. Stephan is also incredibly organized and consistently makes sure that every day runs smoothly. He always ensures that everyone sees the birds—not just those who spot them first. He manages group dynamics beautifully, avoids conflicts before they even arise, and creates a warm, cohesive, and supportive atmosphere. His patience and dedication are unmatched. In short: he is an exceptional guide, the best we’ve ever travelled with, and the main reason this tour was such a success for us. We will absolutely choose future Rockjumper tours where Stephan is the leader. Regarding the tour itself: The lodges were generally excellent—some truly outstanding, others more standard but still very good. The only exception was the Blue Post Hotel, where it seems we were given quite outdated rooms compared to what is advertised. Our only real regret is that the itinerary did not include the Masai Mara. While we did see carnivores—including fantastic sightings of leopards—the Mara offers much higher concentrations of wildlife overall: large prides of lions, bigger herds of elephants, massive numbers of antelopes, and that classic East African savanna experience. Including it, or at least offering a 3–4 day extension, would add immense value to the tour. Missing the Mara felt a bit like visiting France but skipping the Eiffel Tower. Apart from that, the experience was superb. The group was wonderful, the birding outstanding, and the journey an absolute pleasure from start to finish. We had an unforgettable time, and we look forward to travelling with Rockjumper again—especially on tours led by Stephan.
