Malaysia is a developed Asian nation offering first-class facilities, an impressive network of national parks and reserves, and an outstanding diversity of rainforest birds and mammals. It remains one of the finest destinations anywhere for immersive lowland and montane birding.

This journey traces a sweeping arc through Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, focusing on some of Asia’s most storied birding sites. We begin at Bukit Tinggi and in the vast forests of Taman Negara, where headline species include the near-mythical Mountain Peacock-Pheasant, Malayan Peacock-Pheasant, Great Argus, Great Slaty Woodpecker and a tempting selection of pittas such as Garnet and Malayan Banded. From there, we move into the cool broadleaved forests of Fraser’s Hill for specialties like Blue Nuthatch, Fire-tufted and Black-browed Barbets, Malayan Whistling Thrush and a host of laughingthrushes, sibias and broadbills.

Dropping to the coast, Kuala Selangor offers a contrasting mix of mangroves and wetlands, with birds such as Mangrove Whistler, Pink-necked Green Pigeon and a range of kingfishers and herons. Crossing to Borneo, we continue via the Crocker Range to magnificent Mount Kinabalu, home to sought-after endemics such as Bornean Green Magpie, Chestnut-hooded and Sunda Laughingthrushes, Fruithunter, Bornean Whistling Thrush and the delightful Bornean Forktail. At Sepilok’s famous canopy walkway and the wildlife-rich Kinabatangan River, we look for hornbills galore (Rhinoceros, Bushy-crested, Black and others), rare Bornean Bristlehead, Storm’s Stork and a suite of lowland forest and riverine specialists.

The region’s mammals add another layer of excitement, with realistic chances of Bornean Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey, several gibbons and langurs, nocturnal flying squirrels, a variety of diurnal squirrels and, with luck, Bornean Pygmy Elephant or Leopard Cat.

Glen did a fantastic job on this tour. Birding in the lowland rainforest looking for Pittas was certainly a challenge! Glen was informative, patient and persistent, and did his best in making sure that the entire group saw these fascinating birds. The itinerary was comprehensive, the accommodations were great and the food was excellent. Overall, a wonderful trip.

Many thanks for your patience and kindness in helping me see and hear such fabulous birds. Loved sharing the pheasants and partridges with you. The "WOW" moments!

Glen Valentine
JW & MW, Malaysia & Borneo

We felt that the trip was very well organised and efficient so we could spend as much time in the field as possible. Glen was a terrific guide - excellent birder as well as his concern that everyone was seeing the birds. Glen was very even in his manner at all times and with everyone.

Adam Walleyn
JB & CM, Malaysia & Borneo 2020

Our local leader and Adam Walleyn made a great team; we appreciated Adam’s great skill at spotting and identifying the mammals and herptofauna, which is an important part of any birding trip for us.
