Peru is one of the world’s top destinations for wildlife enthusiasts, combining breathtaking landscapes with incredible biodiversity. Stretching from the snow-capped Andes to the vast Amazon Rainforest, the country offers a rich tapestry of ecosystems, cultures, and experiences.

Starting in Cusco, we’ll head to our base in Ollantaytambo before spending a full day up the mighty Abra Malaga, which will take our breath away—quite literally! The remnant patches of polylepis forest host both Tawny and endemic White-breasted Tit-Spinetails, the exhibitionist Stripe-headed Antpitta, endemic Junín Canastero, Puna Tapaculo, Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant, Blue-mantled Thornbill, and Red-rumped Bush Tyrant.

We complete this part of the tour by visiting several Incan archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley, including Sacsayhuaman, Qenko, Pisac, Moray, Lago Huaypo, Ollantaytambo, and perhaps the most famous tourist site in the world—Machu Picchu. Here, we have very good opportunities to find the localized endemic Inca Wren, alongside other avian treats such as Chestnut-breasted Mountain Finch, Bearded Mountaineer, and Parodi’s Hemispingus.

Tour Pace & Walking

MODERATE TO CHALLENGING: This tour requires a good level of fitness, stamina, and overall health. It’s best suited for experienced birders who are comfortable with a more active itinerary. Please note that it may not be ideal for avid photographers, new birders, or those with mobility or health concerns.

Moderate paced tours suited for those in good health with good levels of fitness. Not suited for anyone with mobility challenges or serious medical conditions. Our Relaxed series of tours are designed to focus on having an enjoyable holiday with a bird and wildlife focus. Where possible; we have reduced or removed long drives, single night stays and poor/rustic accommodation. We have also sought to reduce or remove difficult hikes, narrow/muddy trails and otherwise oppressive environmental conditions. Early starts and night birding are mostly optional, and we will not spend much time searching for difficult and/or skulking species. These tours are not suitable for hardcore birders and listers, or dedicated photographers.

What our clients say about us

Robert Williams
JH & CH, Southern Peru

Our guide, Rob Williams, was exceptionally well qualified, good humoured in all circumstances and remarkably diligent in accommodating all levels of birding skills within our group. He went out of his way to make sure that each member of the group realised their expectations for the trip. We would welcome the opportunity to join him on additional trips; he is a quality individual with sound values and a superb representative of Rockjumper Birding Tours.

Forrest Rowland
PB, Peru 2018

Forrest Rowland is a terrific guide. He was incredibly knowledgeable of the birds we encountered on our trip. Further, he is very friendly, engaging and enthusiastic. I’d be quite pleased to join him again on any birding tour in the Neotropics.

Robert Williams
PM, Peru

Rob Williams is the best guide I have ever birded with - wonderful birding and people skills.

Robert Williams
CB - Peru 2022

Guides were awesome. Found lots of birds; guide was way too knowledgeable about the bird species and taxonomy.

Robert Williams
UA, Peru

Rob Williams is right up there among the very best tour leaders. His vast experience from lots of research and conservation projects and intimate knowledge of the country add lots of value compared to a tour leader who is "just" a good organiser, birder and guide. He is also great company, with a sublime sense of humour.
