South Africa’s south-western Cape is one of the continent’s most distinctive birding regions, combining spectacular scenery, extraordinary botanical diversity and an exceptional concentration of endemic and near-endemic birds. Designed for those with limited time, this four-day tour offers a focused introduction to the very best of birding around Cape Town, with particular emphasis on the region’s most charismatic and sought-after species.

Based in and around Cape Town, the celebrated “Mother City”, we will make the most of the remarkable variety of habitats found within easy reach of this spectacularly situated city. Mountain fynbos, coastal wetlands, strandveld and rocky shorelines all lie close at hand, allowing us to target an impressive range of birds while enjoying some of South Africa’s finest scenery.

The Cape Floristic Region is one of the world’s great centres of endemism, and our time here will focus on finding many of its signature species. Key targets include Cape Rockjumper, Cape Sugarbird, Orange-breasted Sunbird and Cape Siskin, alongside a rich supporting cast of fynbos specialists, raptors, waterbirds and other regional favourites.

With two full days dedicated to exploring the Cape Town region, this tour is ideal for birders looking to experience the essence of the Cape without the time commitment of a longer itinerary. Compact, varied and highly rewarding, it offers an excellent concentration of memorable birds, striking landscapes and uniquely South African habitats.

As a professional wildlife biologist, I was very impressed with Greg's abilities "beyond " just identifying species, so to speak. ln other words, Greg gave impressive, in-depth natural history descriptions of nearly every species of wildlife we recorded.

James Wade Lee

I`d like to write some words about our guide, James Wade Lee. I must admit that I haven’t met such a good bird guide in a long time. Despite his young age, Wade is an excellent guide – he knows the calls of all the birds perfectly and can spot them without fail. Many times we all searched through our binoculars in the thick undergrowth for a singing bird, and it was always only Wade who found it – somewhere in the tangle of twigs in the distance. It’s clear he has a fantastic grasp of the terrain. On top of that, he’s polite, friendly, very well-mannered and has good breeding – what more could one ask for? Congratulations on having such a brilliant guide. Please pass on my warmest regards to Wade. With thanks for the wonderful trips.

It was a great pleasure to meet David Hoddinott, and a privilege really to spend time with such a great birder. Mine was a focussed trip around several species not seen in South Africa, and we saw all the birds, including a wonderful view of a male Buff-spotted Flufftail. David also found a few species where I had only had single sightings previously.
