South Africa’s south-western Cape is one of the continent’s most distinctive birding regions, combining spectacular scenery, extraordinary botanical diversity and an exceptional concentration of endemic and near-endemic birds. Designed for those with limited time, this four-day tour offers a focused introduction to the very best of birding around Cape Town, with particular emphasis on the region’s most charismatic and sought-after species.

Based in and around Cape Town, the celebrated “Mother City”, we will make the most of the remarkable variety of habitats found within easy reach of this spectacularly situated city. Mountain fynbos, coastal wetlands, strandveld and rocky shorelines all lie close at hand, allowing us to target an impressive range of birds while enjoying some of South Africa’s finest scenery.

The Cape Floristic Region is one of the world’s great centres of endemism, and our time here will focus on finding many of its signature species. Key targets include Cape Rockjumper, Cape Sugarbird, Orange-breasted Sunbird and Cape Siskin, alongside a rich supporting cast of fynbos specialists, raptors, waterbirds and other regional favourites.

With two full days dedicated to exploring the Cape Town region, this tour is ideal for birders looking to experience the essence of the Cape without the time commitment of a longer itinerary. Compact, varied and highly rewarding, it offers an excellent concentration of memorable birds, striking landscapes and uniquely South African habitats.

As an experienced world traveller and birder, I must say that the Eastern South Africa and Cape Extension III tours went beyond my already high expectations. All in all, we saw nearly 540 bird species, plus many mammals, including the "Big Five". This was my 2nd (Relaxed ) tour. As far as I can tell relaxed means staying more than 1 night in most places. It means not too strenuous hikes. Not sure it means shorter days. On this tour the ones that brought us back straight to dinner were mostly by our own choice. The relaxed tours are a great option. Paul is an excellent guide and lovely person. He is a good driver, which is important. He was good at adjusting the order of birding places for the day when necessary. He did a great job accommodating for the medical needs that came up. He maintained his patience and cheerfulness throughout. He had good relationships with the hosts of the various places we stayed. I would certainly go anywhere with him and recommend him to everyone.
