The provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga on South Africa’s eastern seaboard offer some of the continent’s most rewarding birding, set against a backdrop of dramatic landscapes and exceptional mammal viewing. With over 750 bird species recorded in the region—an astonishing total for such a compact area—this corner of the country exemplifies South Africa’s remarkable ecological diversity. Add to this a modern, traveller-friendly infrastructure and warm local hospitality, and you have the ideal setting for a world-class birding adventure.
Our journey begins in the rich highland grasslands of Mpumalanga, where the charming town of Wakkerstroom serves as a gateway to one of the country’s most celebrated birding hotspots. These montane grasslands, wetlands, and rolling hills are home to an outstanding array of localised and endemic species. We’ll be searching for high-priority targets such as the endangered Yellow-breasted Pipit, the handsome Blue Korhaan, and the cryptic Grey-winged Francolin, along with a host of other specials, including Buff-streaked Chat, Eastern Long-billed Lark, and Southern Bald Ibis. Wakkerstroom’s bird-rich wetlands also provide habitat for African Rail, Red-chested Flufftail, and African Marsh Harrier, making for varied and exciting birding.
From the highlands, we descend into the subtropical Zululand region, arguably the most species-rich corner of South Africa. This region’s unique overlap of tropical, temperate, coastal, and savanna ecosystems creates an extraordinary melting pot of biodiversity. We’ll explore a mosaic of habitats—from sand forests and broad-leaved woodlands to estuaries and grasslands—offering up a stunning diversity of birds and mammals. Species such as Pink-throated Twinspot, Neergaard’s Sunbird, Woodward’s Batis, Crested Guineafowl, and Southern Banded Snake Eagle are among the many possibilities in this dynamic birding paradise.
As we travel inland once again, we pass through the cooler, elevated mist-belt grasslands and forests of the Natal Midlands—habitats famed for their endemics and near-endemics. These atmospheric, often shrouded landscapes are home to the striking Cape Parrot, Orange Ground Thrush, Drakensberg Prinia, and the elusive Barratt’s Warbler, among others. The combination of forest edges, clear streams, and rich undergrowth makes for productive and rewarding birding.
Our final leg takes us to Himeville, nestled at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains, from where we’ll ascend the spectacular Sani Pass into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. This high-altitude adventure provides the opportunity to seek out alpine specialists rarely encountered elsewhere in Africa. Target species here include the charismatic Drakensberg Rockjumper, Mountain Pipit, Bearded Vulture, Ground Woodpecker, and Sickle-winged Chat, all set against a breathtaking mountain landscape of sweeping valleys and rugged cliffs.
This Eastern South Africa tour offers an unbeatable combination of iconic African wildlife, scenic diversity, and some of the most exciting birding on the continent—from grassland endemics and Zululand rarities to alpine treasures on the roof of southern Africa.

Good to very good. Some hides, mostly for mammal photography.
This tour was fantastic-it exceeded all expectations in every aspect. The country is beautiful and it was shown to us in a way I will never forget - the plants, birds, mammals landscapes, insects and people. One of the most rounded lifetime experiences I have had. And now for the guide. Daniel was one of the best (if not the best) guide I’ve ever had. He has incredible birding skills-we missed nothing! His natural science knowledge is vast, especially for his age-it shows his love of nature and willingness to share it. He was very good with us as a group-able to joke around with everyone and meet individual needs. He adapted to all situations smoothly and with great confidence. His driving skills were superb-in the 13 000 km we traveled, not once did I think he made a dangerous or even slightly aggressive move. His choice of lodges and restaurants was great-we didn't lose any weight on the trip! I would travel with him anytime and will seek out destinations where I know he is the guide. Thanks Rockjumper for a wonderful trip.
Always a fantastic experience with Rockjumper from inquiry through to the end. Guides always the best of the best
First, compliments to whoever came up with the concept of this tour. It seems unusual, even unique. This was a second choice for us because COVID restrictions postponed our tour to Cape, Kruger, and the Victoria Falls extension. The inclusion of the wine tastings seemed whimsical but it was genius. It’s as if we had 2 different vacations, back-to-back, and both memorable. We suspect that logistics for this tour were especially challenging. Glen was more than up to the task, every booking was right on time and of excellent quality. Rockjumper is a class act! We had some really memorable sightings and wildlife experiences due to Glen’s knowledge and diligence. We also appreciate that besides the birds and big mammals he gave us lots of information on habitat, environmental challenges, and especially for Suna and me, knowledge of plants. We walk around our California neighbourhood and notice all the imported African plants growing in our yards! We felt the timing was good too. It was late spring in the fynbos with many flowers still showing, and we were able to see many migrant birds down from the north.
Andre, our guide, has such an infectious nature, which had a huge positive effect on our stay. His incredible knowledge of birds was indeed humbling. A birder's paradise and a guide passionate about birds and nature - what more could one ask for?
"We all immensely enjoyed this Tailor-made tour. Dan is an excellent guide: great ears, great eyes, persistent, patient, cheerful, and knowledgeable about all nature. He really went all out for us, and he succeeded in finding very elusive and range-restricted species. We hope to travel with him in the future. Other aspects of the trip: lodging, transportation, etc. were excellent too. We appreciate the behind-the-scenes efforts by Heinz and the rest of the Rockjumper team."
