Spain is one of Europe’s finest wildlife destinations, combining exceptional birding with dramatic landscapes, historic towns, excellent food and a wonderfully varied countryside. This relaxed journey through Andalucía and Extremadura is designed to showcase the very best of southern Spain at an unhurried pace, blending rewarding birding and wildlife experiences with culture, scenery and distinctive regional character. Along the way, we enjoy a broad range of habitats, from wetlands and coastal plains to mountain landscapes, open steppe and Mediterranean woodland.
We begin around Ronda, one of Andalucía’s famous White Villages, before visiting the flamingo-rich wetlands of Fuente de Piedra and the limestone landscapes of the Serranía de Ronda. From here we continue to Tarifa and the Strait of Gibraltar, where seabirds, migrating raptors, shorebirds and Northern Bald Ibis are among the many possibilities. Our time here is complemented by opportunities to explore the historic town, enjoy the surrounding coastal scenery and take a private boat trip into the Strait.
Our journey then takes us to the vast wetlands of Doñana, one of Spain’s most celebrated natural areas, where marshes, lagoons, salt pans and Mediterranean woodland support White-headed and Marbled Ducks, Greater Flamingo, Eurasian Spoonbill, Iberian Magpie and numerous other wetland species. The diversity of habitats here ensures a constantly changing selection of birds and wildlife.
Continuing north into Extremadura, we explore open steppes, rugged sierras and traditional dehesa countryside, home to some of Spain’s most iconic birds and mammals. A private 4x4 safari offers the possibility of Iberian Lynx, while Spanish Imperial, Golden and Bonelli’s Eagles are among the region’s standout raptors. We finish in Monfragüe National Park, one of Europe’s great raptor strongholds, before visiting the productive wetlands of Arrocampo and historic Trujillo.

UNDEMANDING: This tour is ideal for birders and wildlife enthusiasts of all experience levels. It’s suitable for most mobility levels and offers a relaxed pace, ensuring an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Easy to moderate. Suitable for all birding & wildlife interest levels. Our Relaxed series of tours are designed to focus on having an enjoyable holiday with a bird and wildlife focus. Where possible; we have reduced or removed long drives, single night stays and poor/rustic accommodation. We have also sought to reduce or remove difficult hikes, narrow/muddy trails and otherwise oppressive environmental conditions. Early starts and night birding are mostly optional, and we will not spend much time searching for difficult and/or skulking species. These tours are not suitable for hardcore birders and listers, or dedicated photographers.
Comfortable to very comfortable.
Mostly easy & undemanding. Much of the birding is in open habitats or from roads, viewpoints & some hides. Some species may require patient scanning.
Ronda & Andalucía’s White Villages, flamenco, historic Trujillo, Spanish wine & gastronomy
Excellent opportunities for birds, mammals, landscapes & historic architecture, although this is not a dedicated photographic tour.
Stephan and Yeray were tremendous guides and trip leaders. They were excellent in finding the birds and mammals and helping the whole group get eyes on them. Their knowledge about mammals, the local environment, etc was excellent as well. They were able to handle the few curveballs that came up and always communicated plans clearly. They were always pleasant and great at keeping the group relaxed and in good spirits. The tour logistics were excellent with good consideration for location, travel, birding time, etc. All of the accommodations were good to excellent - no issues at all. Thanks for an excellent bird tour!
This was a great short tour, well-designed to get us into a wide range of habitats for a fine selection of European birds. Yeray Seminario did a fantastic job of finding Spains specialties while making adjustments to dodge persistent rainstorms during the week and a local festival in Andalusia. He was knowledgeable, helpful, patient, and fun to bird with, and I would not hesitate to recommend his tours or travel with him again. There were lots of great birds; I particularly enjoyed the vultures, raptors, and the very accessible Northern Bald Ibis colony. Accommodations were great, particularly our last day at a lodge that specifically targeted birders, with its own hides. It was also a very fun group of birders. These days, shorter tours with smaller groups fill the bill for me, and I would love to see more of them!
Everything was very good. We certainly tried for everything. Great that we had the time to look at reptiles, frogs, etc. I certainly got almost all my major targets.
Javi is one of the BEST bird guides there is! He’s very professional, organized, treats everyone with respect, and persists in finding those hard-to-find birds - sometimes successfully and sometimes not. He continuously checks recent eBird reports and checks in with colleagues to see if there are any updates to help in finding specific species. He doesn’t give up!! Not easily anyway. He gives us the day’s plan the evening before and then again at breakfast each day, and tells us which birds we’ll be looking for in different habitats. If the opportunity arises, I wouldn’t hesitate to do a tour with javi again. Javi also pays close attention to how each participant is doing and provides frequent “comfort” stops, etc, etc. He’s also good at informing us the length of drive between stops. AND he’s a careful and good driver. We give javi an A+.
Rob Williams was a fantastic guide -- "Everything's under control!" He is absolutely superb at bird identification. Rob has a great sense of humor, and a wonderful relationship with the innkeepers and vendors along our way. Yeray Seminario, our guide on the Gibraltar Extension, is a treasure! He is soft-spoken, easy-going, approachable, and incredibly knowledgeable about birds. I was delighted to learn that he is an eBird moderator for Spain. He directed us to several great restaurants in the Tarifa area. Alberto Bueno is a sweetheart! He is so classically Spanish and so passionate about the birds. Except for myself (!), I think he was the most enthusiastic about EVERY bird we saw. He is a delightful guide -- compassionate, generous and fun. He and Rob made an unbeatable team and got along seamlessly. We saw well over 250 species of birds, enjoyed fantastic scenery, food and wine! It was a very good trip, and my thanks go to Rob, Yeray and Alberto for all their hard work.
