Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America has been much neglected in birding circles, overshadowed by neighbouring Costa Rica, Panama and Guatemala. Fortunately, large swathes of Nicaragua remain pristine, with some 17% of the country protected by national parks. A bird list of just over 700 species shall surely increase dramatically as more people bird the country. At present we cover the extraordinary 640 000 acre Rio Maiz Biological Reserve, part of Nicaragua’s extraordinary Atlantic lowland rainforests, the largest contiguous lowland rain forest outside the Amazon Basin.
