The Southwest Pacific Odyssey cruise, beginning in New Zealand and ending in Papua New Guinea, provides an unprecedented opportunity to see some of the world’s most rarely-observed seabirds and remote island endemics. We land at Norfolk Island, New Caledonia, and four of the Solomon Islands, before disembarkation at East New Britain off Papua New Guinea. Such mouth-watering species as Kagu, Beck’s Petrel, Heinroth’s Shearwater, Roviana Rail, Norfolk Island Parakeet, Rennell Shrikebill and Crow Honeyeater are possible, as well as a potential new species of storm petrel off New Caledonia. Birds aside, the list of cetaceans is outstanding and there are also many snorkeling, swimming and relaxation opportunities. The cruise is taken on a comfortable Russian expedition ship, the ‘Spirit of Enderby’.
